Soleminis: Sardinian Culture Among Hills and Festival Traditions

Soleminis lies in a hilly area of the Campidano di Cagliari, on the border with the last mountain foothills of Serpeddì.

Church Art and Everyday Culture

On the edge of the current municipal boundary in Sedd'e Cresia stands the parish church of San Giacomo. The church dates from the 17th century and may have been built over a medieval predecessor. San Giacomo houses a painting of the Trinity and the Holy Family from the late 16th century, originating from a workshop in Stampace. Soleminis is also home to the statue of San Giacomo il Maggiore, a painted wooden work dating from between 1700 and 1749, attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Antonio Lonis.

Casa Corda Spada is a cultural centre with an ethnographic collection, as well as furniture, everyday objects and artefacts from island life. The Mont'Arrubiu Centre is another cultural focal point. The Mont'Arrubiu Centre is an information and documentation centre with a multimedia room for educational activities.

Local Products and Religious Festivals

Bread is one of Soleminis's typical local products. The celebration of Sant'Antonio Abate on 17 January combines religious custom with regional food: after a torchlit procession at night, a large fire is lit, and blessed oranges, mandarins, bread and wine are distributed. For planning purposes, 17 January, the last week of May, and 25 and 26 July are widely spaced dates; anyone wishing to include a festival in Soleminis should therefore plan their stay around the relevant date.

During the Sant’Isidoro festival in the last week of May, the saint's statue is carried to a rural church. The procession is accompanied by worshippers, riders, groups in traditional dress and festively decorated ox carts known as traccas. The festival in honour of San Giacomo and Sant’Anna on 25 July includes religious and civic celebrations, craft and painting exhibitions, film screenings and fireworks.

The Campidano State Forest and Getting Your Bearings Locally

Soleminis is one of the four municipalities across whose territory the Campidano State Forest extends. Its animal population includes, among others, the Sardinian hare, partridges, quails and foxes; Sardinian wild boar are found only in the denser areas. Alongside the churches and festivals, this creates a clearly defined natural setting associated with Soleminis.

The Campidano State Forest can be reached from Soleminis via a partly paved road approximately 5 kilometres long. When travelling from Soleminis to the state forest, the approximate distance and the partly paved surface are equally practical planning details for travellers. Monserrato and San Gottardo are among the train connections to and from Soleminis. When planning a stay, this allows you to consider different focuses: sacred art and everyday culture, festivals held at set times of year, or the landscape and wildlife of the Campidano.
