Serdiana: Discover Churches, Festivals and Landscapes

Serdiana combines sacred architecture, Sardinian festival traditions and a landscape where nature observation is as much at home as scenic views and museums. Around the town, you will encounter a variety of facets: from the Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Sibiola and a typical courtyard house to seasonal celebrations featuring religious rites, favata and young wines.

Romanesque Art and Sacred Architecture

The ancient church of Santa Maria di Sibiola lies about 3 km from Serdiana on gently rolling plains surrounded by olive groves. It is one of Sardinia’s masterpieces of Romanesque art and was built by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of San Vittore di Marseille between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. A trip to Serdiana therefore also leads to a clearly defined example of Sardinian architectural and ecclesiastical history.

Santa Maria di Sibiola has two naves of different sizes. Each nave has its own semicircular apse and its own entrance. Wide arches resting on cruciform pillars separate the two areas. In the centre of Serdiana, you will also find Casa Mura Sebastiano, a typical courtyard house. Another distinctive feature is the chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua in the eastern wing of Castello Roberti, next to the tower. It currently belongs to the Angius sisters.

The parish church of SS. Salvatore is easily accessible from the town centre and offers barrier-free access for people with disabilities. This specific access point complements the historic sacred buildings with practical information for visitors with different mobility needs.

Nature, Viewpoints and Museums

Su Stani saliu is a small salt pond where black-winged stilts and pink flamingos stop in winter. For nature enthusiasts, Serdiana thus offers, alongside its churches, a seasonal aspect centred on observation. The Punto panoramico di Bruncu Mogumu is a viewpoint in the area around Serdiana.

The wider regional area contains several other viewpoints: the Punto panoramico di Monte Urpinu, the Panorama dal Bastione di S. Remy and the Terrazza Umberto I. Also located in the vicinity of Serdiana are S'Acqua 'e is Dolus, a sight listed as an ancient site, and Creartistico, a museum. The wider regional area also includes the Museo Archeologico di Sinnai - Pinacoteca Comunale, likewise a museum. The Campus della scienza, della tecnica e dell'ambiente is another museum in the vicinity of Serdiana.

Festivals with Religious and Culinary Traditions

Serdiana’s event calendar is shaped by several distinctly different periods. The patron saint’s festival is celebrated in mid-May with religious rites and performances. In November, the celebrations include liturgies, favata and the tasting of young wines. The particularly important celebrations take place at the beginning of September in honour of Santa Maria and San Raffaele.
