Historic Centre and Sacred Architecture

Assemini combines sacred architecture, Campidano-style houses and a ceramics tradition. Its square bell tower of San Pietro is particularly striking and is one of the tallest in Sardinia. The parish church of San Pietro is an example of Catalan Gothic architecture from the second half of the 16th century.

In Assemini’s historic centre, the Church of San Giovanni Battista is located not far from the Church of San Pietro. Its floor plan, inscribed within a square, takes the form of a Greek cross; a dome rises at the intersection of the arms of the cross. Two Greek inscriptions have been preserved inside the church.

The Church of San Cristoforo is part of the older building stock and dates from the 17th century. Typical Campidano-style houses made of mud-and-straw bricks, known as ladiri, with round-arched portals stand in the historic centre. Casa dei Centenari is a Campidano-style house built in the mid-19th century.

The Old Town Hall was built in the late 18th century in the Neoclassical style and is regarded as a venue for exhibitions of local artists and models. The Bruno Atzeni Ethnographic Museum displays Sardinian antiques for domestic use in a workshop designed as a house museum.

The first evidence of craft activity dating from the period of Punic rule in Sardinia was found in the Sant’Andrea area.

Ceramics and Panadas from Assemini

Assemini is a pilot centre for ceramics production; local workshops produce high-quality ceramic items. Ceramic-making techniques are presented at Assemini’s arts and crafts exhibition market.

Panadas from Assemini are pastries filled with lamb or eel and potatoes. At the Sagra della Panada in Assemini, panadas made according to the town’s traditional recipe are offered and sampled at various stalls.

Forests, Lagoon and Palms

The area of Assemini extends into the Gutturu Mannu Oasis, a forested area of around 35,000 hectares. The Monte Arcosu Wildlife Protection Oasis is part of Gutturu Mannu Regional Park.

In the surroundings of Assemini, the Santa Gilla Lagoon is a destination for birdwatching and a habitat for around 200 bird species, including pink flamingos. Villa Asquer Park is home to 2,100 palm trees from different parts of the world.

Experience the Conti Vecchi Salt Works

As another nature and cultural experience, the Conti Vecchi Salt Works offers a two-hour visit. It includes the historic buildings and a one-hour guided ride on a small train through the salt works and its nature oasis.
