Castello and medieval borgo

The Castello Giudicale Eleonora D’Arborea was built by Pietro IV d’Aragona by royal decree on 27 July 1355. Today, the Castello currently houses collections on the Risorgimento and the First World War. These include memorabilia related to Garibaldi, weapons, field equipment, newspapers and the tricolour that flew in Trieste in 1918 after the city was returned to Italy. An artistic waxwork collection with more than 400 works from the 16th to the 19th century is also part of the Castello.

The historic townscape also includes Sanluri’s medieval fortified borgo, whose perimeter measured no more than 1,600 metres. The Church of Nostra Signora delle Grazie was renovated in the 18th century on the remains of a 16th-century church. Only the lower part of the bell tower remains from this older church building. Together with the Castello’s collections, this provides access to different periods without limiting Sanluri’s history to a single building.

Monastery, archaeology and religious heritage

The Museo Storico Etnografico dei Padri Cappuccini is housed in a monastery built on a hill from 1608 onwards. On display are illuminated choir books, psalters belonging to the friars, papal decrees dating from the 16th century onwards, relics, statues of saints, tabernacles and monstrances. This collection is complemented by archaeological finds from the Neolithic period as well as from the Early Christian and Byzantine eras. This gives you an especially broad historical spectrum: religious artefacts, written documents and objects are presented alongside traces of much older settlement and cultural history.

Civraxu and Sardinian cuisine

The Museo del Pane e panificazione del Civraxu preserves and conveys the rural traditions surrounding the production of Sanluri’s typical bread, Civraxu. The museum is divided into five sections and covers the product’s early history, working the land, and the stages of mixing, proofing and baking. On request, it offers bread-making workshops for schoolchildren and adults.

Other culinary experiences are also part of what Sanluri has to offer. Birrificio Nanumoru offers a visit with a tasting of artisanally brewed Sardinian beers; a guided brewery tour can be booked there with prior reservation. Coxinendi offers a workshop and a show kitchen featuring traditional Sardinian cuisine, where typical dishes are prepared and tasted. Historical festivals and trip planning

Sa Battalla is a historical reenactment held every two years and organised by the town of Sanluri together with the local Pro Loco. The historical battle to which Sa Battalla refers took place on 30 June 1409 in the countryside around Sanluri between the armies of Aragon and the Judicate of Arborea. The Festa del Borgo usually takes place on the last Sunday in September and brings Sanluri’s historical crafts, traditions and flavours back to life. Since the two events follow different schedules, they can each provide a separate point of reference in terms of timing for your trip planning.

The Itinerario 17 route section passes through Sanluri and continues to the now-disused Sanluri Stato railway station. If you are considering cycling stages, you should understand this route as a geographical orientation; the information does not automatically mean that every section is accessible or usable today. This keeps planning close to the documented circumstances while leaving room for your individual choice of accommodation, excursions and sightseeing.
