Aritzo Between Mountain History and Nature

Aritzo combines the history of Sardinia’s mountain regions with cultural sites and paths through the landscape. The snow trade associated with the Neviere of Aritzo was already active in the 17th century and made the town an important centre for distributing ice throughout Sardinia. This unusual history gives a stay particular depth, as local tradition and the mountain landscape complement each other directly.

The Parco Pastissu lies just outside the town. There you will find nature trails for walks, as well as equipped areas for spending time and relaxing.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda displays traditional men’s and women’s costumes, as well as local animal masks made from goat or sheepskins. The masks on display include “su mamutzone”, “s’ulzu”, “sa maltenica” and “su boe”. This gives you a tangible sense of a local cultural space that extends beyond individual buildings to include clothing, crafts and traditional forms of expression.

The Ecomuseo also has an area dedicated to the production of Carapigna, a lemon sorbet. This traditional handmade sorbet was once prepared with snow from the Gennargentu, which was stored in the Neviere. The culinary speciality is therefore directly connected with Aritzo’s distinctive history of snow.

Sa Bovida houses the permanent exhibition “Bruxas” about magic and witchcraft in Sardinia between the 15th and 17th centuries. The Museo Antonio Mura is located in the former town hall and displays important works by the painter Antonio Mura. Casa Devilla has been preserved as a historic dwelling in the town centre; its original Spanish floor plan probably dates back to the 17th century.

The Castello Arangino also makes a striking architectural impression. It was built in 1917 and designed after the model of a medieval castle. In this way, it adds to Aritzo’s cultural profile with a building whose appearance deliberately recalls an older world of castles.

Forests, Fountains and Su Texile

Su Texile has been a natural monument since 1989 and is a symbol of Aritzo. From the edge of the town, Su Texile can be reached after travelling more than two kilometres along the road to Cantoniera Cossatzu. If you would like to combine the landscape with the character of the town, this distinctive natural site is one of the important points of reference during your stay.

One route in Aritzo leads through chestnut, hazelnut and cherry forests. Along the way, you will pass the historic fountains Funtana Giaria, Albara and Loddo before the path continues to Tacco di Texile.

Practical Information for Your Visit

No reservation is required for the Museo Etnografico. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. From September to May, opening hours are 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00; in summer, it is open in the afternoon from 16:00 to 19:00. These hours help you combine museum visits with walks and other destinations in the town.

You can take guided tours of the Neviere di Aritzo after contacting the Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda o del Gennargentu. This allows you to explore the history of the snow trade not only through the museums, but also through the associated Neviere.

In Aritzo, the Sagra delle Castagne e delle Nocciole has been held for 50 years on a weekend in October. If you plan your trip for this period, a traditional festival centred on chestnuts and hazelnuts will take its place alongside the museums and landscape.
