Discover Fonni: Culture, Traditions and Mountains
Accommodation in Fonni
Fonni reveals its distinctive character especially where pastoral life, religious festivals, archaeological evidence and mountain landscapes come together. This creates a destination where cultural interests combine with observing nature and paths through forests, while also making local traditions visible.
Culture and Religious Traditions
The Museo della Cultura Pastorale di Fonni presents the pastoral life of the Fonni community in an old 19th-century manor house: images, sounds and typical equipment convey this part of local history. The museum also displays the masks of Fonni’s traditional carnival, traditional costumes and the votive bread prepared for the Feast of San Giovanni.
The Santuario della Madonna dei Martiri is a destination of religious devotion, particularly during the annual festivals in honour of the Virgin of the Martyrs. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista was built in the 16th century in the Late Gothic Aragonese style and later remodelled. The Carnival of Fonni is also closely connected with traditional forms handed down over time: the old traditional masks s'Urthu and sos Buttudos are its defining features.
Archaeological Evidence
The archaeological site of Madau is a necropolis with four giants’ tombs. The tombs date from the Late to the Final Bronze Age, face southeast and are arranged in an amphitheatrical layout.
Gremanu is a Nuragic sanctuary consisting of three temple structures. The archaeological site also includes the only known aqueduct from the Nuragic period. In the wider area around Fonni are the Nuraghe Talei, an ancient site, and the Nuraghe Unturgiadore, a historic site.
Historic Neighbourhoods and Landscape
The historic neighbourhoods of Fonni feature mountain houses with scandulas, traditional wooden roof tiles. Murals also adorn these neighbourhoods. For walks in nature, Fonni offers trekking trails through forests and along springs. In Fonni’s bird reserves, you can observe rare species.
The wider area around Fonni includes several landscape destinations described as mountains: Monte su Dovaru, Serra s'Istevene, Punta la Marmora and Su Toni de Girgini. The Museo Etnografico Casa Montanaru and the Museo Nivola are also located in the wider area around Fonni; both are museums.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Carnival of Fonni begins on 16 January with the Feast of Saint Anthony the Great; the traditional masks then appear. On the final day, Su Ceomo is carried through the streets in a masked procession. The Palio di Fonni takes place on the first Sunday of August each year at the nearby racecourse.
The S'Istangiartu tradition originated in 1842. The horsemen associated with it wear traditional costumes, ride decorated horses and lead Fonni’s important processions for Corpus Christi, the Madonna dei Martiri and San Giovanni Battista. “Sos Coccios” is a song in honour of the Madonna dei Martiri and forms part of the Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri, celebrated annually on the first Sunday in June. During the celebration in honour of Saint John, Su Cohone de Vrores is carried in a procession together with the statue of Saint John.
A Local Festival Motif
Su Cohone e Vrores is an elaborately decorated, cake-shaped focaccia approximately 40 cm wide and around 10 cm thick. Cane sticks are inserted into the focaccia, with 160 bird figures and 5 chicken figures attached to them.
