Churches with Special Features

The Church of Madonna del Carmelo was rebuilt after a collapse and reconsecrated in 1912. It has a single-nave layout and preserves the original altar beneath richly painted vaults. The Church of Sant’Antioco has five arches made of pink trachyte in its single nave. Beneath 18th-century frescoes, the arches lead to the main altar; the depictions show the life and martyrdom of the saint. The Church of San Giovanni in Gavoi is a small Gothic-Aragonese church. An inscription on the exterior dates it to 1756. The Church of San Gavino was built in the late Gothic-Aragonese style; its architecture indicates that it was constructed in the 15th to 16th century. Both churches reveal different historical layers of the town.

Festivals and Traditional Dances

The celebrations in honor of San Giovanni still take place in Gavoi today. They bring the churchyard and the square below it to life with colorful traditional dress, festively decorated horses, prayers and the joy of the start of the summer season. The Casa-Museum Porcu-Satta houses permanent exhibitions on traditional clothing, traditional games and antique jewelry. The museum is located in an elegant early-20th-century house with remarkable interiors, tapestries, furnishings and frescoes. The Stanza Rossa and the Stanza Ciusa are particularly noteworthy.
