Thermal Baths on the Tirso

The Antiche Terme Romane are located on the left bank of the Tirso. The history of the thermal baths also includes the later Aquae Ypsitanae thermal complex, dating from the 2nd to the 3rd century AD: a frigidarium, two tepidaria and two caldaria are arranged in a circular hygienic and therapeutic circuit. The Bagni Termali Is Bangius complex, built in the 19th century, is located on the left bank of the Tirso in Fordongianus; a relaxing and therapeutic bath is possible there.

San Lussorio and Casa Aragonese

The Romanesque church of San Lussorio was built in the early years of the 12th century. Its Gothic-Catalan portal was added during the Aragonese period between 1250 and 1270. San Lussorio is a Romanesque sanctuary and a pilgrimage destination. There is also an underground passage at San Lussorio, decorated with mosaics and frescoes.

The Casa Aragonese in Fordongianus also bears witness to different cultural influences. It dates from the period between the late 16th and early 17th centuries and combines a residential form typical of central Sardinia with architectural and decorative elements from an international repertoire of forms shaped by Spanish mediation.

Fordongianus is known for its quarries of red, green and gray trachyte. Local stonemasons used the stone to build and decorate houses. The Domigheddas necropolis with domus de janas is also located in the Fordongianus area. It is carved into the rock and lies in an impressive natural setting.

Historic Sites in the Surrounding Area

The ancient site of Terme di Fordongianus and the historic sites of Nuraghe Panu Antoni, Nuraghe Ariolu and Nuraghe Prunas are located in the immediate vicinity of Fordongianus. They complement the picture of a place where Roman, religious and Sardinian cultural themes can be experienced together.

Mountains, Cave and Shaped Rock

The area around Fordongianus includes Mount Cuccuru Mannu, Mount Bruncu su Pinno, Mount Serra s'Ascova and the sa Grutta Saua Madri cave. Nuraghe Paranu Antoni stands on the rocks of the Maiori and Ollastra mountains, whose shapes have been formed by wind and water.

Depending on your focus, you can view Fordongianus from cultural, thermal or landscape perspectives. The thermal complexes on the Tirso, the sacred and residential architecture in the town, and the historic sites and natural formations in the surrounding area are particularly prominent. This combination helps you find the right balance for your travel plans without reducing the town to just one period or activity.
