Nature around Montiferru
Montiferru is an ancient volcanic massif made of trachyte and basalt and covered in lush vegetation. Numerous paths lead up its slopes. If you want to explore the landscape along trails rather than simply admire it, this massif is one of the main thematic focal points around Cuglieri.
The natural rock arch S'Archittu is protected as a natural monument under the name S'Archittu di Santa Caterina. Santa Caterina di Pittinuri beach lies below Torre Pittinuri and consists largely of a rocky stretch of coastline. Together, these two features represent a coastal landscape whose character is shaped by more than sand alone.
Churches and historical traces
Chiesa Santa Croce is the oldest church in Cuglieri. Chiesa dei Cappuccini was built together with the monastery in the 17th century by the bishop of Bosa, Traviano Manca de Cedrelles. From 1613 onward, the monastery of Chiesa dei Cappuccini was used by Capuchin friars.
Another historical layer is represented by Chiesa Madonna delle Grazie, which dates back to the late 15th or early 16th century. Cornus reaches even further back in history: the settlement was founded on the plateau of Corchinas in the last quarter of the 6th century BC. The Antiquarium di Cuglieri preserves prehistoric, pre-Roman and Roman finds from the excavations at Cornus.
Holy Week and local cuisine
During Holy Week, a long-established burial paraliturgy is performed in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Neve. This event is therefore one of the special cultural references you can take into account when planning the timing of your trip if religious traditions and historic sites are important to you.
Panadas also distinguish Cuglieri within the regional panada route: the panadas from Cuglieri are significantly smaller than those from the other municipalities on this route.
