Marrubiu represents a combination of the landscape of Monte Arci, archaeological evidence and local festival culture. A large part of Monte Arci lies within the municipality of Marrubiu; the area is home to Sardinia's largest obsidian deposit. Rio Murus is the name of a watercourse in the Marrubiu area. This creates a destination where nature and cultural themes come together through specific landscapes, trails and structures.
Hiking on Monte Arci
The hiking trail from Zuradili to S'Ortu de Sisiniu Garau' is approximately 2 kilometres long and can be walked. It runs entirely within the municipality of Marrubiu and is easy, with some moderately difficult sections.
The hiking trail from Zuradili via Pranu Ollionis to Sa Trebina Longa is approximately 15 kilometres long as a there-and-back route. It can be walked, reaches an altitude of 809 metres and runs through the municipalities of Marrubiu and Morgongiori. This trail is also easy, with some moderately difficult sections. For the longer route, in addition to the distance, the elevation of up to 809 metres is another factor to consider when preparing.
Church and festival tradition
The rural church of Santa Maria di Zuarbara is also known as Santa Maria di Zuradili and stands about seven kilometres from the town centre on the lower slopes of Monte Arci. The name Zuradili connects the rural church with the starting point of both hiking trails. Marrubiu also has its own carnival tradition, Su Marrulleri. It is expressed in colourful parades of masks and allegorical floats. For Su Marrulleri 2026, the carnival parades in Marrubiu were scheduled for 15 and 22 February 2026.
Archaeological evidence
An inscription at the Praetorium of Muru de Bangiu has been interpreted to mean that the complex may have served as a temporary headquarters for the provincial governor when travelling from Karales, his usual official residence, to northern Sardinia. The complex includes a bathing facility with the typical rooms apodyterium, frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium.
Sa Domu ‘e s’Orku is a buried nuraghe surrounded by a village of round huts. The protonuraghe Spignau is an early Bronze Age corridor-built structure. Together with the Praetorium, these structures show how varied the historical themes around Marrubiu are: from a possible Roman administrative station with a bathing facility to Sardinia's characteristic nuraghes. Culture enthusiasts in Marrubiu turn their attention to the Praetorium of Muru de Bangiu, Sa Domu ‘e s’Orku and the protonuraghe Spignau.
