Wetland and Natura 2000 Landscape

Behind Putzu Idu beach lies the Sa Salina Manna wetland. It covers an area of approximately 65 hectares. Together with the nearby ponds Pauli Marigosa and Pauli Mesalonga, Sa Salina Manna forms part of the Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance “Stagno di Putzu Idu (Salina Manna e Pauli Marigosa)”, with the site code ITB030038. Anyone wishing to include not only the beach but also the landscape behind the coast will find a distinct natural setting here.

Torre di Capo Mannu

Torre di Capo Mannu was probably built between 1572 and 1577 as a watchtower and signal tower to protect the salt pans and the numerous tuna fishing facilities. After passing through the centre of Putzu Idu, access is via a signposted narrow road from Sa Marigosa. By car, you can get to within approximately 300 m of the tower. Torre di Capo Mannu offers an excellent 360° panoramic view. This gives the site a tangible insight into the history of the coast combined with a wide-open view.

Water Sports and Excursions at Sea

For maritime experiences, Putzu Idu has a raft rental service with a driver for excursions in the marine protected area and to the island of Isola Mal di Ventre. Isola Mal di Ventre can be reached from Putzu Idu in half an hour. There are refreshment facilities on Putzu Idu beach, and beach equipment can be rented in Putzu Idu. The waves at Putzu Idu frequently attract kite surfers and windsurfers.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

If you travel to Putzu Idu via the SS 292, continue for 2.3 km at the entrance to Riola Sardo. Then turn towards Putzu Idu; after another 11 km, you will reach the beach. The journey is divided into one section to the turnoff and another section to Putzu Idu beach. Different interests may therefore influence your choice of accommodation in Putzu Idu: the long quartz sand beach, the Sa Salina Manna wetland, Torre di Capo Mannu, or excursions and water sports at sea. This allows you to choose your location based on the planned focus of your stay.
