Montiferru and historic town centre

Santu Lussurgiu lies at the foot of the southeastern side of the Montiferru range. In the historic centre, historic architectural elements have been preserved, featuring neatly hewn stones, relieving arches, and door and window surrounds made of basalt and trachyte in various shades. The different shades of the stones used stand out on the façades just as the relieving arches do. On the façades, basalt and trachyte are not only distinguished by their different shades; door and window surrounds as well as relieving arches are also among the preserved architectural elements. For those interested in culture, the focus is therefore on the interplay of basalt, trachyte, arches, and door and window surrounds.

Churches with a clear historical classification

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a Late Gothic Aragonese building constructed in 1473.

The Church of San Leonardo is located in the wooded area of the “seven springs” at the foot of Montiferru. The medieval building is associated with its former affiliation with the Order of Saint John. San Leonardo combines the medieval church building with the wooded area of the “seven springs” and its former affiliation with the Order of Saint John at the foot of Montiferru. Santa Maria degli Angeli and San Leonardo thus represent different historical classifications: one building is Late Gothic Aragonese and was constructed in 1473, while the other is medieval and associated with the Order of Saint John.

Ancient sites in the surrounding area

The ancient sites of Nuraghe Martzache and Nuraghe Narzos are located in the surrounding area of Santu Lussurgiu. Nuraghe Aurras 2 and Nuraghe Chimbeina are also located nearby. These four ancient sites broaden the cultural perspective beyond the churches and town centre. For those interested in culture, this section connects the four ancient sites with the churches and the historic town centre of Santu Lussurgiu.

Mountains, forest, and a protected area

Mount Monte Tinzosu is located in the surrounding area of Santu Lussurgiu. Mount Punta Crastu Zulurias is also located there. Mount Punta Pala Frearzu and Mount Cuccuru de Acutzadorzu are situated in the same surrounding area.

The Sos Molinos valley is a special protected area. This provides nature enthusiasts with a distinct landscape connection alongside the mountains and Montiferru.

Hiking trail and living tradition

The S'Ena 'e s'Alinu–Sa Preda Lada mountain hiking trail is approximately 2 km long, takes around 2 hours, reaches an elevation of approximately 800 m, and leads to the Sa Preda Lada spring. When planning the day, the route can be allowed for as a separate time block of approximately two hours. In addition to the duration, the approximately 2 km length and approximately 800 m elevation can also be taken into account when planning the day.

Another side of the town is revealed by Sa Carrela 'e Nanti: this is a traditional carnival horse race on an unpaved dirt road through the historic centre of Santu Lussurgiu. Its route through the historic centre directly connects the race with the town centre.
