Churches and Religious History

The Basilica di Santa Maria di Bonarcado is a Romanesque church whose construction was completed in 1146. The Chiesa Campestre di Santa Cristina was begun in 1915 and completed in 1928. Both buildings offer different historical perspectives and make Bonarcado interesting for travellers who do not want to limit their interest in sacred architecture to a single era. The construction dates are far apart: the Basilica was completed in 1146, while Santa Cristina was not begun until 1915 and was completed in 1928. Thus, medieval Romanesque architecture and a 20th-century church building come together in this context. The time span extends from the Romanesque period to the first half of the 20th century.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano dates from the 18th century. It is located on Via Roma, one of Bonarcado’s historic thoroughfares, and is a site associated with important procession routes. The church therefore represents not only a single building, but also the historic streetscape and the religious routes connected with the town.

Nostra Signora di Bonacatu is a Byzantine sanctuary associated with Sardinia’s oldest Marian cult. Its Byzantine character distinguishes the sanctuary from the Romanesque Basilica and the church buildings of the 20th century.

Landscape at the Foot of the Montiferru Range

Bonarcado lies at the foot of the Montiferru range, in a landscape of oak forests, olive groves, vineyards and orchards, particularly cherry orchards.
