Monte Santa Vittoria and Oasi di Assai
The Monte Santa Vittoria area is characterised by granite formations, rocky peaks, valleys, springs and fast-flowing streams amid dense woodland. Established in 1983, Oasi di Assai is a permanent wildlife sanctuary extending across the municipal areas of Neoneli and Nughedu Santa Vittoria. Sardian deer, fallow deer, numerous wild boars, as well as wildcats and martens, live in Oasi di Assai. The character of the area therefore ranges from striking rock formations to Sardinia's diverse wildlife.
Natural history at the Museo naturalistico
The Museo naturalistico dell'Oasi di Assai in Alamoju displays taxidermied Sardinian animals, a diorama of the woodland landscape, a xylotheque, and minerals and fossils from Sardinia. The museum's outdoor area includes a traditional charcoal kiln and a shepherd's shelter built using traditional techniques, known as a Pinnetta. Nature, woodland and traditional ways of life are made tangible here through a range of concrete exhibits and structures.
Domus de Janas and ancient sites
From the parish church of San Giacomo in Nughedu Santa Vittoria, follow Via Regina Elena for approximately 500 metres. Shortly after a watering trough, the rocky outcrops containing the Domus de Janas of the Sas Arzolas de Goi necropolis lie on the right-hand slope beside the road. This route connects the village area with an archaeological site whose rocky outcrops form an immediate part of the landscape.
