Arborea between Culture and Landscape
Arborea brings together two clearly distinct sides within a small area: a culture shaped by architecture, land reclamation and local history, and landscapes ranging from the coast and wetlands to protected natural areas. The Piazza Maria Ausiliatrice includes gardens. The historic houses of Arborea are designed in the Liberty and Neo-Gothic styles. This makes the town particularly appealing if you do not view culture separately from the landscape and everyday regional life.
Industrial History at MUBA
A central gateway to this history is MUBA, the Museo comunale della Bonifica di Arborea. The museum is housed in the former mill, is considered an example of industrial archaeology, and collects, displays and provides access to materials and documents relating to the history of land reclamation in the Arborea area. Its historical section tells the story of the land reclamation, the town’s foundation, its creators and its architecture. Large explanatory panels and multimedia features accompany this presentation. For exploring the architecture, MUBA offers audio guides in four languages. The new exhibition route also presents grave goods from the necropolis of S’Ungroni.
Orri and Archaeological Traces
The archaeological area of Orri also adds to this picture. It is located in the municipality of Arborea on the shore of a small body of water enclosed by a tombolo, with views towards the waters of the southern Gulf of Oristano. The Orri area contains a Nuragic well temple. The combination of the landscape setting and archaeological remains makes this an interesting place for visitors who pay attention to spatial relationships as well as individual structures.
Cycle Path, Natural Areas and Coast
Arborea offers several distinct themes for nature and outdoor activities. The Arborea cycle path crosses the entire municipal area. In the S'Ena Arrubia natural area, Agenzia Forestas welcomes visitors and organises visits as well as a guided tour of the exhibition route. The Stagno di S'Ena Arrubia is designated as a nature reserve and a special protection area. Spiaggia di Arborea has a very long stretch of coastline with light-coloured sand. A monumental pine forest extends immediately behind the sand. Stagno di Corru s’Ittiri covers an area of 5,699 hectares in the municipalities of Arborea, Terralba, Arbus and Guspini.
Local Flavours and Festivals
Arborea also has its own culinary highlights. At the 37th edition of the Sagra della Polenta in Arborea, held in 2019, various polenta dishes were served, including polenta with tocio, Radicchio di Treviso and pancetta, as well as with Luganega. The Sagra delle fragole in Arborea has been documented for more than three decades. As part of this festival, fresh strawberries could be sampled in various ways, especially with cream.
