Language, Townscape and Bread Culture

The dialect spoken in Villaurbana is one of many variants of Campidanese, a major subdivision of the Sardinian language. It occasionally contains influences from Catalan and, at times, Castilian words. This linguistic feature is an integral part of the town’s local character.

In some of Villaurbana’s neighborhoods, especially the older ones, the traditional Campidanese settlement structure has been preserved. This includes old portals leading to courtyards and so-called “lolle,” as well as historic streets, some of which have been repaved. The townscape is therefore best understood through its architectural details and the different structures of the older neighborhoods.

Villaurbana’s bread culture includes the firm breads “sa prezzida” and “su tureddu,” the soft breads “sa moddixina” and “sa lada,” as well as decorated or festival breads made in the form of “su coccoi fattu in domu.” A bread specimen from Villaurbana is kept at the Museo del Costume di Nuoro (ISRE).

Archaeology and Trails

The archaeological area of the Complesso di Baumendula lies on the outermost hilly foothills of Monte Arci in central-eastern Sardinia. The Nuraghe Bau Mendula complex has a central main tower and additional towers and is dated to the Middle to Late Bronze Age. In the Villaurbana area, there is also the Nuraghe Turriu, in addition to Bau Mendula. The Tomba dei Giganti di Craddaxius complex is one of the remains dating from the earliest phases of the Nuragic civilization in the Campidano.

From Villaurbana, the route toward Oristano follows the road to the district of Tiria; after approximately 4.5 km, you reach the hill on which the nuraghe stands. The site can be easily reached via a steep path. The hiking trail to Nuraghe Bau Mendula is 5.5 km long, has 130 m of positive elevation gain, takes an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes, and has an easy difficulty level.

Nature and Local Culture

Is Aruttas Santas is a natural monument with basalt columns and surrounding woodland of holm oaks and downy oaks. The local trails in Villaurbana are signposted and can be walked independently. This allows archaeological and landscape themes to be weighted separately when planning your own excursion.

The Chiesa di San Crispo is a small rural church in the area surrounding Villaurbana. It reflects the popular religious devotion and rural history of the area. The Festa Patronale Santa Margherita includes religious and civic celebrations in honor of Villaurbana’s patron saint.
