Discover Samugheo: Textile Art, Gorges and Sardinian Traditions
Accommodation in Samugheo
Samugheo combines a distinctive Sardinian rocky landscape with a culture in which textile art, masks and handicrafts are visibly present. The landscape is characterised by isolated and wild mountains, although they are not particularly high. In addition, there is a succession of gorges, ravines and imposing rock walls.
Landscape and Native Vegetation
The native vegetation of Samugheo includes mastic shrubs, holm oaks, wild olive trees, spurges and wild carnations.
Nuraghe, Gorge and Local History
The historic structures include Nuraghe Perda Orrubia, a nuraghe with a single tower. Its chamber has three pointed-arch niches; the access corridor has a fourth niche. At Perda Orrubia, attention is therefore drawn not only to the exterior shape of the tower, but also to the internal layout of the space.
The Byzantine Castello di Medusa stands high above the gorge formed by the Rio Araxisi. Parts of the imposing surrounding wall, a small tower and a cistern have survived. At Castello di Medusa, the position above the gorge and the surviving structures create a tangible link between the landscape and local history.
The parish church of San Sebastiano stands in the centre of Samugheo. It was built in the 16th century in the Gothic-Aragonese style. Many murals in the town centre address the importance of textile production to the town. In the town centre, sacred architecture and textile history therefore stand side by side.
Sardinian Textile Art and Traditional Dress
MURATS – Museo Unico Regionale dell’Arte Tessile Sarda – is a permanent museum of Sardinian textile art at the entrance to Samugheo. Five 18th-century textile mourning garments known as “tapinu ‘e mortu†are exhibited there.
Masks, Handicrafts and Events
The surviving traditions also include carnival masks. In Samugheo, the memory, use and production of the s’Urtzu carnival mask have been preserved. The memory, use and production of the is Mamutzones carnival masks have likewise been preserved. A Maimone is a carnival display of traditional masks from all over Sardinia and beyond. Tessingiu is a historic event deeply rooted in Sardinia’s cultural heritage, with a history that can be traced back almost sixty years, celebrating and promoting Sardinian handicrafts.
Trekking, Gorges and Grotta dell’Aquila
The Samugheo area offers opportunities for trekking in oak forests, while rappelling is possible in steep gorges. Trekking in oak forests and rappelling in steep gorges are two clearly separate ways of exploring the landscape. Grotta dell’Aquila on Monte de Sa Pala de is Fais has a precisely defined access route: it can only be reached by descending from above over approximately 25 m using ropes and ladders.
Bread Culture in Samugheo
The Sagra del Pane in Samugheo was established to promote the important culture surrounding bread.
