Bauladu: Archaeology, Churches and Nature

Bauladu combines archaeological evidence, church architecture, nature and a local event. These themes emerge at specific sites: the Santa Barbara di Turre area, the churches of San Lorenzo and San Gregorio Magno, the rural church of Santa Vittoria, and Nuraghe Crabia. The nature park, the Zinnuri spring, the Archeobike Tirso route and the Sagra della Pecora add to the character of the town.

Santa Barbara di Turre: Settlement and Nuraghe

The Santa Barbara di Turre archaeological area lies approximately 1.35 km southeast of Bauladu's town centre. It includes a complex nuraghe, a settlement with periods of use ranging from the Nuragic period to the Middle Ages, a Late Antique or Early Medieval necropolis, and a Domus de Janas. The area thus brings together evidence of settlement and burial with the nuraghe architecture and the Domus de Janas.

The nuraghe at Santa Barbara di Turre has a four-lobed layout. A one-storey main tower and two secondary towers are connected by a wall that encloses the courtyard.

Archaeological investigations also uncovered evidence of metalworking and craft production. The site is dated to the period between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.

Churches and Architectural History

The church of San Lorenzo was built in the 12th century by Camaldolese monks from Santa Maria di Bonarcado.

The church of San Gregorio Magno in Bauladu was built between 1205 and 1228. The portal of San Gregorio Magno is decorated with a late-sixteenth-century limestone relief in the Gothic-Catalan style. It depicts the Virgin and Child between two angels.

San Lorenzo and San Gregorio Magno thus represent different dates within Bauladu's architectural history.

Hill, Woodland, Nature Park and Spring

The rural church of Santa Vittoria stands on a hilltop, overlooks Bauladu and offers panoramic views. Nuraghe Crabia is 12 m high and stands on a rise in an open cork-oak woodland in Bauladu.

Santa Vittoria and Crabia differ in their locations: the rural church stands on the hilltop above Bauladu, while the nuraghe stands on a wooded rise.

Bauladu also has a large nature park with rare reptiles. The rare reptiles include the Aesculapian snake and the Sardinian snake.

The Zinnuri spring lies amid the greenery of the municipal park. It is suitable as a rest area.

Archeobike Tirso and Local Cuisine

The Archeobike Tirso cycling route passes through Bauladu. Cycling complements the fixed archaeological sites, churches and natural areas with a route.

The Sagra della Pecora took place there on 22 June 2019. At this festival, traditional local dishes based on sheep meat were sampled.
