Beach and Coastal Landscape
Fiume Santo appeals to visitors who want to combine beach, nature, and regional history in a single stay. The beach is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Sassari and stretches along a coastal strip that continues toward Ezzi Mannu and Stintino. Light sand, quartz grains, and clear water characterize the beach.

For different travel days, the destination can be clearly understood thematically: the beach represents the coast and swimming, Stagno di Pilo represents nature observation, and the archaeological site represents geological history. These three perspectives complement one another, without requiring you to reduce Fiume Santo to a single type of excursion.
Lagoon and Natural Environment
Stagno di Pilo is recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) because of its wealth of flora and fauna and is suitable for birdwatching. In the regional surroundings of Fiume Santo, the Stagno di Pilo Casaraccio and Saline di Stintino lagoon system includes the priority habitats coastal lagoons (1150*) and Mediterranean salt steppes (1510*). The beach itself thus forms the maritime reference point, while the natural environment behind it shows another side of the coastal area.
Fossils and Regional History
The Roman villa of Fiume Santo is located in the Nurra di Sassari area on the northern coast, at the mouth of the river of the same name and a few miles from the ancient colony of Turris Libisonis. A paleontological site was discovered at the Fiume Santo power plant in 1994. It yielded thousands of animal bones, which made it possible to reconstruct the region’s ecosystem during the Miocene. The fossil fauna includes remains of Oreopithecus bambolii, nicknamed “Proto.” It also included giraffes, antelopes, small amphibians, and reptiles, including a crocodile.

Practical Information at the Beach
For the 2026 tourist season, traffic and parking at Fiume Santo beach are regulated by municipal ordinance 67/2026. During the 2025 beach season, there was a designated dog area approximately 250 meters long; it could be used from June 3. The beach is part of the A.B.A.F. network (Aree Balneari ad Accesso Facilitato) and offers free assisted bathing from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 through September 30, 2026.
From Sassari, you can reach the beach via the signposted Fiume Santo turnoff, an asphalt road to the coast, and a short unpaved section leading to the parking areas. This sequence describes the access route specifically; the beach services, by contrast, are each linked to a particular season or end date.
