Santa Maria La Palma: Wine, Traditions and Expansive Views

The Cantina Santa Maria La Palma combines two experiences with different focuses: The “4 Sensos” tasting includes a tour of the Cantina Santa Maria La Palma and a tasting of four wines or labels. “3 Binos” likewise combines a tour of the Cantina with three wines for tasting and typical products. Before the tasting, visitors can also explore the production facility. This gives you a closer impression of the processes before the various wines and products are brought to the table.

Church and agro-pastoral traditions

Another point of reference is the parish church of Chiesa di Santa Maria La Palma. It was inaugurated in 1953 and built by ETFAS, the Ente per la trasformazione fondiaria e agraria in Sardegna. Its Marian dedication gave the entire borgata its name. The church and the place name are therefore directly connected, something that can be traced on a walk through Santa Maria La Palma.

The Festa della Tosatura conveys the values and traditions of the agro-pastoral Nurra. The focus is on milk processing from milking to cheese; educational workshops are dedicated to preparing ricotta and sweet dishes. The Festa also demonstrated the care of the animals, milking, shearing, processing the milk into its derivative products, as well as processing and using the wool. On the culinary side, tastings of dairy products such as cheese, ricotta, yoghurt, Casu axedu and sweet dishes made from them were planned. For adults, cooked mutton was also planned.

Events and excursions

For the period from 15 July to 18 July 2026, the programme “Una tarda al Burg / Una sera al borgo” was planned in Santa Maria La Palma. It combined theatre, music and events in the Algherese language. If you would like to give your stay a cultural focus, this programme complements the themes of wine, church and local traditions with an event shaped by language and the arts.

The surrounding region also opens up further perspectives. A narrow asphalt road branches off the SS 291 between Fertilia and Santa Maria La Palma towards Monte Doglia, the highest elevation in the Parco di Porto Conte. From there, the 360-degree view stretches across the Bay of Porto Conte, the coast towards Porto Ferro, the Gulf of Alghero, the Calich wetlands and the park’s adjoining agricultural zone as far as the Sassari area and the neighbouring municipalities of Alghero. A visit to Nuraghe Flumenelongu is also planned in connection with the Azienda agricola Nure.
