Perfugas can be explored by visitors through three themes: sacred art, archaeology and landscape observation. These include the Retablo di San Giorgio, several museums, a rural church built on volcanic rock, a petrified forest and the Coghinas River landscape – Lago di Castel Doria. Depending on your interests, you can examine art-historical details, place natural history in context or observe the river fauna.
Retablo and Church Art
The Retablo di San Giorgio measures 8.60 metres in height and 6.40 metres in width. It consists of 52 wooden panels painted in oils in the Gothic-Aragonese style. The Museo Diocesano e Retablo di San Giorgio also houses a collection of silverwork and goldsmithing, as well as wooden sculptures from different periods. The museum is located in the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The rural church of Chiesa di San Giorgio stands on volcanic rock near an imposing nuraghe, which gave it its name. Built in the 15th century, it is made of red volcanic rock and designed in the Gothic-Catalan style. This building brings together striking materials, a clearly established historical date and a connection to a nuraghe.
Archaeology and Natural History
The MAP – Museo Archeologico Paleobotanico displays plant fossils from the petrified forest of Anglona. This forest formed between 30 and 15 million years ago. Discovered on the banks of the Rio Battana, the petrified forest is accessible to visitors at the MAP – Museo Archeologico Paleobotanico di Perfugas and at the nature and landscape observation site in Località Monte Santu Selvadore.
For landscape observation, the Coghinas River landscape – Lago di Castel Doria offers another perspective. Along old agricultural paths, you can view river landscapes and the river fauna found there. This allows museum visits and nature observation to be combined according to your interests, without both experiences having the same character.
