Roman Traces and Sardinian Cultural Heritage
The Ponte Romano in Porto Torres was built about 2,000 years ago and still stands today on seven impressive arches over the Riu Mannu River.
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale Antiquarium Turritano is located in the vicinity of Porto Torres. Its collection documents Sardinia’s connections with the central and western Mediterranean as well as the Aegean. Turris Libisonis is an archaeological park and museum. The site is considered one of the best-preserved, most significant and most fascinating examples of Roman Sardinia.
The Basilica di San Gavino is Sardinia’s largest Romanesque monument. A different historical period is represented by the San Gavino a mare sanctuary, also known as the Church of Balai vicino, which was built in the mid-19th century. The Museo del Porto preserves the memory of Porto Torres’s transformation through the development of its port.
A total of 22 tombs have so far been discovered in the Su Crucifissu Mannu necropolis. They were created from the Late Neolithic period, between 3200 and 2800 BC, and used until the Early Bronze Age, approximately until the 16th century BC.
Coast, Bay and Cycle Path
Balai Beach is located in the vicinity of Porto Torres. Balai is a small bay protected by limestone cliffs, offering golden sand and crystal-clear water.
A coastal cycle path connects Balai Beach with the coastal area of Porto Torres and continues as far as Balai Lontano. If you would like to include cycling in your trip, this connection offers a clearly defined coastal aspect for your planning.
The historic site Imbarco traghetto Porto Torres is also located in the vicinity of Porto Torres. The historic sites Nuraghe Biunisi and Nuraghe Sant'Elena are nearby. Bau Bau Beach, Monte d'Accoddi and Spiaggia della Marina di Sorso are also in the surrounding area.
Asinara and Practical Orientation
The island of Asinara can be reached from Porto Torres using the public ferry service operated by Compagnia di Navigazione Delcomar. The service operates from the Dogana-Segni landing stage on the Porto Torres–Cala Reale route. For you, this connection is one of the practical ways to add an island destination to your stay.
When planning the cultural part of your trip, you should also take a current status into account: since 2 May 2026, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Antiquarium Turritano and the archaeological area have been temporarily closed due to redesign work and accessibility improvements.
