Ozieri between Archaeology and the Old Town
Ozieri combines an archaeological timespan spanning thousands of years with a historic centre featuring palaces influenced by Spanish and Neoclassical styles, churches, former monasteries, fountains and traditional balconies. This gives you a cultural arc that extends from prehistory to sacred art.
From the Grotta di San Michele to the Bronze Age
The Grotta di San Michele gave its name to the Ozieri or San Michele culture of the Sardinian Late Neolithic; this culture is dated to 3200–2800 BC. The cave has a total development of 160 metres and comprises 15 points of interest in the form of small rooms and passageways. In the San Nicola district of Ozieri, the Nuraghe Sa Mandra 'e Sa Jua archaeological complex includes a nuraghe and a village with round and rectangular huts.
Museums in Historic Buildings
The Civico Museo Archeologico di Ozieri is housed in the restored former Clarisse convent complex. It preserves materials discovered in the caves of Ozieri and in the Ozieri area. The Cattina bronze collection and the Delogu-Tola ingot are among the most significant evidence of the Bronze Age. Reservations are mandatory at the Civico Museo Archeologico di Ozieri for groups and schools.
Churches and Sacred Art
The Church of San Francesco in Ozieri was consecrated on 24 April 1575. Inside, there is a wooden altarpiece with green-painted and gilded sections. It is accompanied by wooden statues of the Immacolata, Saint Michael, Saint Francis and other Franciscan saints. The Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra di Ozieri is housed in the premises of the former Tridentine seminary. Its picture gallery brings together, in a single room, the largest number of paintings by the Maestro di Ozieri.
Surroundings, Cycling Route and Getting There
In the immediate vicinity of Ozieri, the Basilica di Sant' Antioco di Bisarcio stands on a rocky hill beside the remains of a large Benedictine monastery. For orientation in the landscape, cycling route 30 between Berchidda and Ozieri/Chilivani offers a special connection to Lago Coghinas and the Monte Limbara area. Lago Coghinas is designated as an SIC and SPA area; the route itself runs through a particularly interesting section from a scenic and natural-history perspective.
Ozieri is connected to the railway network via Ozieri-Chilivani railway station. From there, the ports of Olbia, Golfo Aranci and Porto Torres can be reached. The town also has its own culinary profile: Spianata di Ozieri is also known as pane fine and is an old bread that is still made today in modern bakeries from water, salt, yeast and durum wheat semolina.
