Bivona: History, Pescabivona and Culture

Historic Center and Architectural History

The Chiesa madre chiaramontana dates back to the 13th century; only the portal of the main façade remains from the Gothic church. The Chiesa di Santa Rosalia preserves the fercolo of the saint’s statue from 1601. The Torre dell’Orologio was built in 1775 and houses the town clock.

The Palazzo ducale dates back to the 16th century and was the residence of the city’s first ducal family, the De Luna d’Aragona. The Palazzo del marchese Greco is an 18th-century Baroque aristocratic palace and the only aristocratic palace in the city to have preserved its architectural features.

Hills, Art and Cultural Venues

The Parco Artistico della Pace stretches across two hills in the upper part of Bivona, at the foot of Monte delle Rose. The Teatro Comunale is a versatile venue for small music concerts, theater events and outdoor educational activities. The Santuario della Madonna dell’Olio was included in the regional charter of places of Sicilian identity and memory in 2008.

Pescabivona: Fruit with a Defined Season

Pescabivona refers to the fruit of four peach ecotypes: Murtiddara or Primizia Bianca, Bianca, Agostina and Settembrina. They developed in the production area, which includes parts of the municipality of Bivona. They are characterized by sweet, firm flesh and a high sugar-to-acidity ratio. The four ecotypes ripen from the first half of June until the end of October.

Peach Festival Culture

The recurring Sagra della Pesca di Bivona (Sagra della PescaBivona) reached its 39th edition in 2026. It includes guided tours of the town as well as visits to farms focusing on the traditions and flavor of Pescabivona. The festival program includes peach tastings, cooking shows, wine tastings and a food village.
