Siculiana between Torre Salsa and history

Siculiana combines the natural setting of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa with notable evidence of the town’s history and an annual festival. The natural and cultural highlights range from gypsum cliffs and dunes to Chiaramonte Castle and the Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso.

Coast and landscape of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa

The 761.62-hectare nature reserve Torre Salsa is located in the municipality of Siculiana in the province of Agrigento. The Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa stretches between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa.

There, gypsum cliffs alternate with calcareous Globigerina marls and, in places, layers of clay. The different rocks give the individual coastal sections a changing appearance. Viewed from the sea, this means a succession of different rock formations within the same Riserva.

The coast of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa extends for approximately 6 kilometres. Along this stretch, cliffs of varying steepness alternate with dunes and extensive, secluded beaches. During the summer months, the beaches are used for swimming. When planning time by the sea, it is useful to distinguish between rocky cliffs, sandy dunes and the beach sections used for swimming. For a trip focused on swimming, the timing should therefore be assessed differently from a visit where rocks, dunes or panoramic views are the main focus.

Paths, orchid garden and panoramic views

In the Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa, narrow paths between the rocks provide access to the beach in some places. Beach access is limited to individual locations and is not described in the same way for the entire stretch.

From the visitor centre of the Oasi Torre Salsa, an unpaved road leads to the orchid garden and then into the juniper valley. Further up, you reach an area with quarries that have been abandoned for years and a wide panoramic view of the coast and the sea.

The unpaved road and the narrow paths between the rocks should be considered as different sections of the route when planning.

Chiaramonte Castle, Torre dell’Orologio and the Santuario

Chiaramonte Castle in Siculiana stands on the rocky tip of a promontory and overlooks the town and the valley, which slopes gently towards the Mediterranean. The castle is said to be of Arab origin and was rebuilt by Federico Chiaramonte at the beginning of the 14th century.

There is a mechanical clock at the Torre dell’Orologio in Siculiana. It was built in 1887 and bears the signature of Vincenzo Scibetta from Bisacquino.

The Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso was built by the Carmelite friars at the end of the 16th century.

The festival “La festa di lu tri di maiu”

The annual festival in honour of the Santissimo Crocifisso is known as “La festa di lu tri di maiu”. It takes place every year from 29 April to 3 May.
