Caltanissetta Between History and Landscape

Archaeology, Baroque and Sacred Architecture

The Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta reopened to the public in 2006 following the renewal of its visitor routes, educational interpretation and content. It presents the history of ancient settlements in the urban and rural areas of Caltanissetta, as well as other sites in the province, from prehistoric times to late antiquity. Bronze and, in particular, ceramic finds from the settlements of Sabucina and Dessueri are the main focus.

The Diocesan Museum was founded in 1983 on the initiative of Monsignor Giovanni Speciale on the ground floor of the bishop’s seminary in Caltanissetta. Palazzo Moncada was built in the mid-17th century at the behest of Luigi Guglielmo Moncada and regained its original appearance after extensive restoration. In the Luigi Guglielmo Moncada Lapidarium, you can see figurative corbels from the construction of Palazzo Moncada, which are of great importance to the history of the Sicilian Baroque. You can also discover the building and alteration phases of the palace, as well as the history of the Moncada cities.

The Fontana del Tritone on Piazza Garibaldi was created in 1956 by Michele Tripisciano and Michele Averna. The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Nova contains trompe-l’œil frescoes by the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans. The Teatro Regina Margherita dates from 1870. The Church of Santo Spirito was built in 1095 by Ruggero il Normanno on the site of an already existing fortified Arab estate.

Caltanissetta’s Holy Week is also one of the town’s defining cultural features. It is an old tradition renewed every year. If you would like to experience sacred history alongside living religious customs, this aspect offers a distinct way to approach the city.

Lake, Rocks and the Regional Landscape

The Riserva Naturale Lago Sfondato nature reserve protects an area of geomorphological, hydrogeological and scenic interest. It includes a small lake of karstic origin in a typical landscape of Sicily’s inland areas and in the gypsum formations of the Gessoso-solfifera Series. The reserve is home to endemic, rare or highly localized plant species. The lake and the reed beds along its shores provide resident and migratory birds with shelter and a resting area. The area is therefore particularly suited to you if nature observation, geology and regional landscapes are among your interests.

Castello di Pietrarossa stands on a rock overlooking the valley below. Monte Cane is located in the area around Caltanissetta.
