Assoro Between Mountain Views and Architectural History

Assoro is located on Monte Stella in the Erei Mountains. The town lies on its western slope at an elevation of 900 metres and offers impressive views over the surrounding area. Monte Altesina, Monte Zimmara and Monte Iudica, on the other hand, lie in the broader regional area around Assoro.

Churches and Historic Architecture

The Basilica di San Leone was declared a national monument in 1933 because of its artistic beauty. Its architecture combines elements of Gothic-Catalan, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Particularly striking is the wooden coffered ceiling dating from 1490, which is considered an example of a Tecta Picta. The year 1490 refers to the ceiling, while 1933 is associated with its designation as a national monument.

The Badia di Santa Chiara was built in 1541 incorporating an existing early Christian site dedicated to Santa Sofia. Palazzo Valguarnera was built in 1492 in an elegant Catalan style. Only a few but significant ruins remain of Castello di Valguarnera; the castle was built in the first half of the 13th century during the Norman period. The Chiesa dello Spirito Santo in Assoro was built in the 13th century in honour of the Holy Spirit. The dedications of the religious buildings also differ: the incorporated site of the Badia was dedicated to Santa Sofia, while the Chiesa dello Spirito Santo was dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
