Gibilmanna – Sanctuary, Museum and Mountain Landscape

Sanctuary in the mountain landscape

Gibilmanna combines the Santuario Maria SS. di Gibilmanna with a distinctive mountain landscape. The sanctuary is located at an altitude of around 800 metres on the slopes of Pizzo Sant’Angelo. The Sicilian Natura 2000 site “Boschi di Gibilmanna e Cefalù” is classified under site code ITA020002 as a Type B site. Trail 603 offers views over a valley with forests, cultivated fields and artificial lakes. Gibilmanna thus combines sacred culture with a diverse landscape.

Church and Marian images

The Santuario is a three-aisled church with side chapels and, in its present structure, probably incorporates the original Benedictine church. It houses the marble effigy of Mary with the Child Jesus, attributed to Antonello Gagini and dated to the 16th century. Restoration work in 2014–2015 also revealed an older image of the Hodegetria, which had been hidden beneath a so-called Byzantine icon. The sacred works thus bring together different historical layers.

Museum in the monastery complex

The Museo Fra Giammaria da Tusa is located in the restored former stable of the monastery attached to the Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna. It is divided into ten rooms, each named after a religious brother. Its holdings include Franciscan artefacts, valuable sacred vestments and furnishings, objects donated for devotional purposes, and items from other cultures. According to experts, a handcrafted organ with reed pipes dating from the 17th century is considered a unique example in Europe.

Capuchins, library and festival

The 17th-century Capuchin catacombs are dedicated to the hermit Giuliano de Placia and occupy the basement of the Madonna Chapel as well as part of the church. The Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini di Gibilmanna was founded in 1535 by Father Sebastiano da Gratteri. The library of the Capuchin Fathers Fra Gesualdo da Bronte preserves incunabula, books from the 16th century, and volumes from the 17th and 18th centuries. From 1970 onward, the Feast of the Madonna di Gibilmanna was scheduled for the first Sunday in September.

Trails across mountain and valley

The location is also clearly defined for hiking. Stage 8 of the Via dei Frati runs via Castelbuono, Isnello, the Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. From Santuario Gibilmanna, the Via dei Frati continues to the Sentiero Salvabosco and, after a mountain section, descends towards Cefalù. Trail 603, “Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti”, begins in the equipped Pianetti area at Pizzo S. Angelo; the Santuario di Gibilmanna is located 200 metres before the trailhead. At 7 kilometres and 243 metres in length, it offers views over a valley with forests, cultivated fields and artificial lakes.
