Marineo: Between the Eleutero Valley and Rocca

Marineo between valley, rock and forest

Marineo lies in the valley of the Eleuterio River, at the entrance to the Bosco di Ficuzza and on the edge of the Eleuterio Valley. The town is dominated by the Rocca, which is also known as the Dente canino della Sicilia and Tomba di Polifemo. The river landscape, forest access and rocky terrain therefore shape orientation in the area.

Castles, churches and art

The Archaeological Museum of the Eleuterio Valley is housed in the 16th-century Castello Beccadelli Bologna in Marineo. The castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the valley. Reconstruction and repairs to the remains began there in 1553; the castle was subsequently converted into a country residence.

A copy of the Baroque Ceramica di S.Ciro can be seen on the side façade of the Chiesa Madre. The Ceramica di S.Ciro was created in Palermo in the first half of the 18th century by unknown artists. The Convento Madonna della Dayna and its sanctuary were built towards the end of the 16th century under Vincenzo Beccadelli on a rocky peak north of Marineo. The church of the Convento preserves significant historical and artistic works, including pieces that predate the present town and monastery. The Convento’s central terrace offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Marineo, the Rocca and the entire Eleuterio Valley.

Festivals with a local character

The Infiorata of Marineo takes place along the Corso dei Mille during the Corpus Domini celebrations. The Infiorata Artistica in honour of Corpus Domini is rooted in a cultural and religious tradition established in the area for more than 30 years. The Dimostranza is a sacred-allegorical travelling performance in 21 scenes about the life of San Ciro, performed by local actors. The Presepe Vivente recreates traditional rural life.

Hiking and landscape experiences

The Gole dello Stretto is a difficult and strenuous hike upstream along the Eleutero; it begins at the Ponte sullo Stretto bridge. The Chiesetta della Madunnuzza is located about one kilometre from Marineo in Mediterranean maquis with several centuries-old oak trees. The Madunnuzza is celebrated on 8 September with pilgrimages and a local festival. Several mills, now preserved as ruins, stand along the Eleutero. On the first Sunday in October, the mountain-bike event Granfondo di MTB “dall’Eleutero a Rocca Busambra” takes place.
