Sea, Sand and Harbor

Donnalucata is a seaside resort with broad beaches and very fine, golden sand. The combination of a wide beach and fine, golden sand defines the resort’s seafront. During a stay in Donnalucata, the beach and harbor can be considered as distinct coastal features.

Historic Traces at the Santuario

The Santuario Madonna delle Milizie was built around 1091 at the site of a battle against the Arabs led by Badr Al Gamali. The sanctuary’s origins are therefore directly connected with the historical fighting that took place here. The name Badr Al Gamali belongs to the event associated with the construction of the Santuario.

The present-day bell tower of the Santuario Madonna delle Milizie dates back to a Byzantine tower from around the year 800. This origin predates the construction of the Santuario around 1091. The bell tower’s architectural history thus reaches back to an earlier period than that of the sanctuary.

Santa Caterina and Local Tradition

The Church of Santa Caterina da Siena also has a clearly dated history. Its foundation stone was laid on July 25, 1878. It was completed in 1885 and consecrated to Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo. The parish of Santa Caterina da Siena was established on December 8, 1918, by an episcopal bull. The laying of the foundation stone was followed by completion and consecration; the establishment of the parish represents a later step in the church’s history.

The Cavalcata di San Giuseppe often combines sacred symbols with motifs that recall local tradition. Religious signs and local customs come together on this occasion.
