Donnafugata: Park, Culture and Special Places

Donnafugata combines historic spaces, diverse garden landscapes and cultural destinations with excursions in the surrounding area. The Castello di Donnafugata originated as a rural villa built around an existing settlement approximately 15 km from Ragusa. This means that exploring the area does not begin with a single building, but with an ensemble of history, gardens and regional culture.

Park and Garden as a Distinctive Experience

The park of Donnafugata covers approximately 8 hectares and is divided into an English garden, a French garden and a rustic garden area. Its botanical diversity is reflected in around 1,500 plant species and several monumental trees. Those who enjoy alternating between architecture and landscape while travelling will find different forms of design in a compact thematic setting.

Several features also make the park interesting to explore. The historic garden contains a stone labyrinth that visitors can explore. In addition, 60 QR codes are distributed along three routes: an architectural and monumental route, a botanical route and an educational route. This means that attention is directed not only to the appearance of the grounds, but also to their architectural, botanical and interpretive aspects.

History, Museums and Unusual Places

The historical side of Donnafugata also includes the Ipogeo di Donnafugata. This is a communal funerary hypogeum with a corridor approximately 17 m long and four symmetrically opposing arcosolia. The historic site of Donnafugata Castle is also located nearby. The area around Donnafugata likewise includes Castello ex Carcere, a castle; the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, a museum; and Castello Naselli, also a castle.

The stay can also be shaped in different ways from a landscape perspective. Grotta Delle Trabacche, a cave, is located nearby, as are the beaches Spiaggia di Kamarina, Spiaggia di Punta Braccetto and Spiaggia di Torre di Mezzo. This selection opens up various thematic perspectives without limiting Donnafugata to just one type of excursion.

Regional Products and Cultural Insights

The FarMuseum is a museum and market dedicated to products from Ragusa’s farming tradition. Visitors can buy local agricultural and food products there, such as preserves, pasta, honey, wine and oil. This complements the historical and landscape impressions with a tangible connection to the region’s produce and everyday culture.

At the Castello di Donnafugata, the visitor route leads through various rooms. Information panels explore the family’s stories as well as curiosities and anecdotes. From October 2020, the MU.DE.CO. was also able to open its doors to visitors to the Castello di Donnafugata. Another cultural event was the 18th edition of the Donnafugata Film Festival, held at the ancient Castello di Donnafugata and at the Fondazione Bufalino in Comiso.
