Eredità between the Irminio natural environment and Sicilian history

Eredità between natural environment and cultural landscape

Eredità is designated in the landscape plan of Ragusa as an area of archaeological interest. For your trip planning, the location offers a view of a landscape where natural history and history exist closely side by side. The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio Nature Reserve covers 134.70 hectares, is located in the municipalities of Ragusa and Scicli, and belongs to the Natura 2000 site SAC ITA 080001 Foce del Fiume Irminio.

The Irminio mouth and practical orientation

The nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio lies about 1.5 kilometres south of Petrantica towards the sea and is considered a place of naturalistic interest. Petrantica borders the integral nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio River. The visitor centre of the nature reserve is located in a manor house that contains a small natural history museum. The car can be parked at this visitor centre.

In Petrantica, at Contrada Eredità, 97010 Marina di Ragusa RG, there is an agriturismo with a 200-square-metre infinity pool. The pool overlooks the sea and the green nature reserve along the Irminio River. Petrantica is also an ancient fondaco built in 1642 and served in 1642 as a rest stop for horses and for couriers who brought mail from Syracuse to the Hyblaean Mountains area. These couriers used the ancient Via Elorina, which connected Syracuse with Camarina and was recorded by Greek authors.

Landscape, olive oil and local history

The lower Irminio plain stretches from the slopes of Eredità to the beaches of Marina di Ragusa, Gravina and Playa Grande. The local character of Petrantica includes extra virgin olive oil made from olives harvested by hand on its own estate. The connection between agricultural landscape, river mouth and coast can already be seen in the different landscape areas.

The surrounding cultural attractions also focus on different aspects. Caucana is a Late Antique and Byzantine settlement at the Anticaglie archaeological site in Santa Croce Camerina. The small church of Caucana dates from the 6th century AD, has three naves and a mosaic-decorated bema. The archaeological excavations of Caucana are about 10 kilometres west of Petrantica.

Castello Donnafugata includes a historic garden with avenues, paths and hidden fabriques among centuries-old trees. The history of clothing is presented at the MuDeCo in Donnafugata. Scicli is about 10 kilometres northeast of Petrantica and is known for its Baroque architecture.

Coast and places for different excursion directions

Marina di Ragusa lies about 2 kilometres west of Petrantica and offers walks along the seafront promenade. Donnalucata is about 6 kilometres east and combines a fishing harbour with walks along the seafront promenade. The approximate distances help you distinguish between natural areas, coastal towns and historical destinations when planning your trip, without limiting the journey to just one type of experience.

If you would like to compare Eredità with other destinations, you can find Pietre Nere San Zagaria, Scoglitti, Scicli, Donnalucata, Cimillà, Campanella-gianforma, Puntarazzi and Cannizzara here.
