Scoglitti between the Coast and Local Life

Scoglitti combines a distinctive coastal area with fishing, churches, festivals and traces of antiquity. Wide Beach at the Lanterna

Behind the Faro, also known as the Lanterna, a very wide beach opens up along the Riviera della Lanterna, which is characterized by new breakwaters. The beaches of Spiaggia La Lanterna and Spiaggia di Kamarina are also located in the immediate vicinity of Scoglitti. The beaches of Spiaggia di Punta Braccetto and Spiaggia di Torre di Mezzo are likewise located in the surrounding area of Scoglitti. Lanterna, Harbor and Fish Market

The Faro, also known as the Lanterna, was recently restored and developed by the Pro Loco into an important cultural center. Scoglitti’s fishing harbor is considered one of the most active fishing harbors in southeastern Sicily. A traditional fish auction takes place every morning at Scoglitti’s fish market. Along the coast, therefore, the focus is not only on the landscape and beach, but also on fishing and local everyday life.

Churches and Sacred Art

The historic Church of San Francesco di Paola was built before 1736. The Church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo on Piazza Cavour was built from 1934 onward. It contains a large mosaic created by local craftspeople depicting the waters of the Red Sea. The two churches emphasize different historical aspects and complement Scoglitti’s maritime character with religious architecture and skilled craftsmanship.

Kamarina and Other Cultural Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The ancient site of Kamarina is located in the immediate vicinity of Scoglitti. The Museo di Kamarina is also located nearby. The Museo Polivalente and Castello ex Carcere are located in the surrounding area of Scoglitti. For travelers interested in cultural history, this means that an ancient site, a thematically related museum, as well as other museums and a castello are located around the town.

Festivals and Sports by the Sea

The Feast of the Assumption in Scoglitti includes a blessing of the sea, during which the statue is taken out on a fishing boat. On Good Friday, the program in Scoglitti includes a living Stations of the Cross in the morning and a procession with the statues of the dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows in the evening. During “Un Mare di Sport,” the Lungomare Lanterna and adjacent areas are used for an afternoon as a freely accessible outdoor sports arena. Visitors can watch and take part in the activities. These events show Scoglitti as a place where maritime tradition, religious customs and community activities coexist.
