Plaia Grande lies within the Natura 2000 site ZSC ITA080001 "Foce del Fiume Irminio". The coastal dune system is designated there as habitat type 2250* "Coastal dunes with juniper".

The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio nature reserve was established in June 1985 to protect the coastal biocoenosis, meaning the community of living organisms on the coast, the rare Macchia-Foresta vegetation stands and the ecosystem of the Irminio River. This makes it a destination whose landscape value lies not only in the beach, but equally in the combination of river mouth, dunes, vegetation and Mediterranean coast.

Walks among flora and the Mediterranean

In the area west of Playa Grande, a path leads through typical local flora to the beach of the Foce del Fiume Irminio nature reserve. Playa Grande also offers walks along the coast with views of the Mediterranean.
