Brucoli between Canal, Sea and Fortress

Brucoli combines a coastal landscape with a rich and layered history. Castello di Brucoli was built in 1467 on the orders of Queen Giovanna Enríquez and was formerly known as Castello della Bruca. The fortress was built to protect Brucoli’s harbour canal from Turkish raids. In the 18th century, the castle was used as a watch and observation post with a military garrison under the jurisdiction of the nearby fortress of Augusta. Those interested in historical connections will therefore find several clearly distinguishable periods in one place.

Castello di Brucoli stands beside a natural canal that runs through it for much of its length and overlooks the Ionian Sea. Brucoli Beach lies in a natural fjord that protects it from the winds. The canal, fortress, sea and sheltered beach location give the town its own distinctive landscape.

Pilgrimage and the Maria SS. Mater Adonai Sanctuary

A fixed date in the annual calendar is 5 August: every year, on the occasion of the Madonna della Neve festival, a pilgrimage takes place from the parish church of Brucoli to the Maria SS. Mater Adonai Sanctuary. The route connects the town with a religious destination and makes the feast day a special cultural reference point for Brucoli.

Maria SS. Mater Adonai is considered Sicily’s oldest Marian sanctuary. The sanctuary was built inside a cave that once served as a refuge for Christians, particularly during the persecutions under the emperors Decius and Valerian. The cave is therefore connected not only with the sanctuary’s religious character, but also with an older history of refuge and faith.

Archaeological Traces at Gisira–Adonai

The archaeological site of Gisira–Adonai includes a Byzantine rock church. The rock church of Maria SS. Mater Adonai incorporates a natural cave that formed the original centre of the cult. Inside the cave of Gisira–Adonai there is a poorly preserved fresco in which only the image of the crowned Virgin with the Child can be recognised.

The settlement history also reaches far back. The Brucoli–Gisira archaeological settlement provides evidence of a Neolithic village through a series of post holes on the plateau west of the canal. The canal thus appears not only as a landscape feature, but also as a spatial reference point connecting different archaeological traces.

Water, Movement and Regional Cuisine
