Buccheri combines impressive cultural heritage with a landscape in which rock, water and woodland play a distinctive role. Culture among Churches, Caves and History

Among the unusual structures are the Neviere of Buccheri. They were built from lava stone and have cave-like, domed or square forms. A historic atmosphere also characterizes MedFest, a recurring event presenting the Middle Ages with flag bearers, dancers and jugglers. The festival also includes tastings of typical medieval dishes and sweets. The Museo degli Antichi Mestieri offers another way to explore the local past. The municipality established it in November 2021 in the Casa del Fanciullo.

The Fontana dei Canali, dating from the 16th century, stands in Piazza Roma. The Church of Sant’Ambrogio houses an antique wooden crucifix by an unknown sculptor. The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate has a three-aisled basilica plan; the stucco work in the central nave was created in 1757 by Giuseppe Gianforma. The statue of Saint Mary Magdalene in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is attributed to Antonello Gagini.

This historic density continues beyond the immediate townscape. The remains of a Norman castle have been preserved in Buccheri. The Church of Sant’Andrea near Buccheri is a rare example of Gothic religious architecture from the Hohenstaufen period. In the hamlet of Le Croci, San Nicola is a small rock church carved out of a natural cave.

Rocky Landscapes, Water and Woodland

The Gole della Stretta di Buccheri provide a focus on nature. Canyoning is possible in this gorge. Its cuts between rock and water were shaped by the waters of the San Leonardo River. Among the municipalities in the Syracuse area, Buccheri has the largest number of forests. Alongside its churches and historical traces, the town therefore also reveals a distinctive natural landscape. Buccheri is also a stop on the Ancient Sicilian Crossroads.

Local Cuisine and Products

The local cuisine includes salami made from pork and wild boar, ricotta, cheese, maccaruneddi and U pani copipi. Another regional specialty is the Tonda Iblea olive variety from Monte Lauro. It is used to produce the extra virgin olive oil of the Monti Iblei, with the protected designation of origin and the Monte Lauro geographical indication.
