Ognina combines maritime activities with archaeological traces on land and underwater. The Isola di Ognina, the coast near Siracusa and the Porticciolo di Ognina offer different thematic ways to explore the surrounding area.

Archaeology off the Coast

Off Ognina there is a submerged archaeological site with the wreck of a Late Antique merchant ship. The shipwreck off Ognina was carrying a large cargo of Late Antique tableware. About 1.5 nautical miles off Capo Ognina, the fragmented wreck of a Junkers Ju 88, a twin-engine multipurpose bomber, was identified. A shipwreck near the coast at Ognina, known since 1986, was carrying large rectangular roof tiles measuring 66 × 50 cm with folded-over edge flanges, as well as semicircular roof tiles.

The Island of Ognina and Its Long History

The Isola di Ognina is listed as a Neolithic settlement. The Isola di Ognina is also home to a Byzantine chapel. During the first centuries of the 2nd millennium BC, a Maltese colony of the Early Bronze Age Tarxien Cemetery culture settled on Ognina Island. The channel of Ognina Island was discovered.

Boats, Diving and Snorkelling

Marina di Ognina offers boat and dinghy rentals. Marina di Ognina also operates a diving centre for diving sites in Ognina, Plemmirio and other areas of Siracusa. SUP boards, canoes and bicycles are also available for hire. This means that boats, diving sites and various rental equipment are available from the same provider.

Porticciolo and Coastal Route

Boat trips depart from the Porticciolo di Ognina. A boat tour departing from the Porticciolo di Ognina includes snorkelling in the Area Marina Protetta del Plemmirio marine reserve. There is also a designated route along the coast of Ognina in Siracusa. The Porticciolo is therefore a starting point for boat trips and for the snorkelling tour described.

Rocky Coves and Beaches in the Surrounding Area

Ognina has rocky coves. Spiaggia Arenella, a beach, is located in the vicinity of Ognina. Spiaggia Fontane Bianche, also a beach, is likewise located nearby. Marchesa di Cassibile, a beach, is located in the surrounding area of Ognina. Those who wish to include additional coastal destinations alongside the coves can consider these three beaches in the respective vicinity of Ognina.
