Melilli combines underground karst landscapes with sacred architectural heritage, archaeological traces, and traditional focaccia.

Underground Landscapes and Stone Architecture

Pirrera Sant’Antonio is an underground quarry in the northeastern part of the Monti Climiti near Melilli and is considered unique among underground quarries throughout the Mediterranean region. For centuries, it was the main extraction site for Melilli’s renowned white building stone. The stone was used for churches, palaces, and monuments in southeastern Sicily. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it contributed to the reconstruction of the towns of the Val di Noto destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, as well as to the development of Sicilian Baroque.

Karst, Caves, and Nature Trails

Villasmundo Cave in the nature reserve extends for approximately 2 kilometers to a terminal lake about 50 meters deep. The Grotta Palombara Integral Nature Reserve is located in the Monti Climiti area in the eastern part of the Hyblaean Plateau, within the municipality of Melilli. It protects an important karst cave system in eastern Sicily with diverse cave fauna. The Villasmundo-S. Alfio Integral Nature Reserve protects an active karst system with permanently flowing streams and numerous stalactites and stalagmites.

In Zone B, the Villasmundo-S. Alfio Nature Reserve includes the “due passi nel bosco” nature trail. Both the Grotta Palombara Nature Reserve and Villasmundo-S. Alfio are part of an educational tour that includes a guided visit to the Museo del Carsismo Ibleo in Syracuse.

Churches, Traditions, and Early History

The Chiesa Madre di San Nicolò Vescovo was completed in 1760 and consecrated on October 28, 1763, by Antonio De Requisens, the Archbishop of Syracuse. Today’s Basilica of San Sebastiano was built from 1695 onward after the previous church was destroyed by the 1693 earthquake.

As part of a local custom during the novena before the Feast of Madonna delle Grazie, the small statue of the Madonna known as “a Bambinedda” is carried from house to house in Melilli; monetary donations for the church are attached to it. The Serbatoio di Costa Farina is still a functioning waterworks facility that regulates the water supply of Melilli’s inhabited center. The necropolis of Contrada Bernardina comprises approximately 50 tombs from the Castelluccio culture.

Local Cuisine and the Terrazza degli Iblei

U cudduruni a miliddisa is a traditional focaccia from Melilli made with durum wheat semolina. It is topped with oil-preserved anchovies, onions, oregano, and sun-dried tomatoes; local Caciocavallo is sometimes added. MU.S.A. is designed as an immersive museum trail that guides visitors through the places, history, and biodiversity of the Terrazza degli Iblei.
