History, Local Culture and Nature

Solarino combines historic buildings, local culture, technological history and nature. Palazzo Requisenz, Museo Etnologico, Orologio Civico, Grotta del Ventaglio and Villa Comunale each offer their own particular focus. This range is also relevant to your travel rhythm: you can place greater emphasis on cultural and historical themes or make natural features and garden spaces the focus of your daily plans.

Architecture and Early History

Palazzo Requisenz is an 18th-century historic building that belonged to the noble Requisenz family. It is considered the only example of Sicilian architecture with significant features of Catalan art. The first documented reports of a church dedicated to Saint Paul in the Feudo Solarino date from 1584. The combination of a noble palace and the early reports of a church dedicated to Saint Paul addresses two levels: visible architecture and sacred history. This creates a cultural focus that takes into account both individual architectural forms and the historical depth of the topics covered.

Rural Culture and Craftsmanship

The Museo Etnologico is housed in a 19th-century oil mill. The Museo Etnologico collects objects from Solarino’s rural culture. The museum also contains a Sicilian cart from the late 19th century, which was decorated in the second half of the 20th century by master craftsmen from Modica with a motif from Cavalleria Rusticana. The combination of the oil mill, rural objects and the decorated cart draws attention to the material side of the town. The cart also adds a connection between regional craftsmanship, visual motifs and later design to the museum collection. Those interested in everyday history rather than just representative buildings will find a different way of experiencing Solarino here.

The Orologio Civico

The Orologio Civico also turns a technical detail into a historical experience. The mechanical clock is located on the tower of the Chiesa Madre and has more than a century of history. The clock mechanism was supplied in 1914 by the company “Cesare Fontana” from Milan. Today, the Orologio Civico is a destination for guided tours. The year 1914 places the clock mechanism in a clearly identifiable phase of its history and complements the architectural and cultural-historical themes with a precise technical detail.

Karst Cave and Villa Comunale

Grotta del Ventaglio lies beneath Solarino. It is a karst cave with numerous stalactites and stalagmites that formed over the course of approximately two million years. According to the municipality, Grotta del Ventaglio remains closed to the public. Therefore, do not plan it as a publicly accessible place to visit. Villa Comunale includes a pine grove, a wooded area with cedars, beech trees and acacias, as well as a rock garden. The cave and the park do not represent the same type of nature: here, a geological interior is contrasted with a planted, landscaped outdoor area.
