Valderice between the Gulf and Island Views

Valderice combines an approximately six-kilometre-long coastline on the Gulf of Bonagia with impressive views of the coast and the Aegadian Islands. It also offers natural areas, trails, sites of cultural and historical interest, and traditional cuisine.

Parkland and Trails on Monte Misericordia

The Parco Urbano di Misericordia covers just over 19 hectares. It features equipped areas, a children’s playground, bocce courts, tables, benches, drinking fountains and toilets. Typical Mediterranean maquis vegetation includes dwarf palms, euphorbia, mastic shrubs, thorny broom and esparto grass.

Two route descriptions are particularly helpful for orientation when hiking. The MT6 is a 2.33-kilometre circular route in the Parco Urbano della Misericordia that starts and ends at the park entrance. The Sentiero Monte Misericordia, by contrast, starts in the built-up centre of Valderice on Via Caposcale. It initially follows a mixed route of unpaved and asphalt paths into the valley of Monte Misericordia, then climbs along its western slope. After the first 7.3 kilometres, it continues along a paved side road between cultivated vineyards and olive groves.

Industrial Heritage and Culinary Tradition

The Molino Excelsior is a testament to industrial archaeology, with preserved machinery and Liberty-style architectural decorations from the early 20th century. It houses a Centro di Cultura Gastronomica dedicated to preserving and promoting local recipes and culinary techniques. The mill also serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, workshops and conferences.

In Bonagia, the Museo del Mare e della mattanza is housed in a 16th-century watchtower next to a tonnara, whose present form dates back to 1626. The museum tells the story of the Tonnaroti in the places where they lived and worked, and displays archaeological finds from the surrounding seabeds. The Tonnara di Bonagia retains a tower, a church and a central courtyard. The present building dates from the 17th century; the tonnara was probably already in operation as early as the 13th century.

Festivals and Cuisine in Valderice

The Bosco di Misericordia is particularly in December the setting for cultural and religious events, as well as religious reenactments. Another recurring tradition is the Carnevale di Valderice, documented since 1992. Allegorical floats make their way along the town’s main street in a colourful parade.

Traditional Valderice cuisine includes pani cunzato, bottarga and cassatedde cu broro. Fish plays an important role because of the intensive fishing activity in Bonagia.
