Verschneid between trails, nature and history

Verschneid combines hikes through meadows and larch forests with small family experiences and sites of cultural and historical interest. Destinations include the Köfele Trail with its play, climbing and relaxation areas, as well as the protected Tschaufer Pond. There are also trails towards the Salten, to Frassineto, Versein and Mölten.

Hiking trails with different highlights

To hike to the Gschnoferstall, start at the Gastrein car park above Verschneid. Trail no. 12 leads across the wide meadows of the Salten high plateau, lined by larch forests, and reaches the hut in about one hour. Typical South Tyrolean dishes are available to try at the Gschnoferstall. Another hike leads from Frassineto through the famous larch meadows to the Gschnofer Stall, one of the mountain huts on the Salten. From Frassineto, several alpine pastures, mountain huts and surrounding villages can also be reached on foot.

The connection between Mölten and Verschneid can also be explored on foot: the hike follows a forest road through woods and meadows. From Verschneid, you can then take bus no. 204 back to Mölten. Behind Frassineto, the Salten rises as a high plateau reaching 1,345 metres. Numerous winter hikes through the snow are possible there.

The Mühlrad Trail leads to the water wheel between Verschneid and Versein. Along the trail there is a small playground designed to represent an archaeological excavation site. The Köfele Trail is a family experience with various stations for playing, climbing and relaxing.

Natural surroundings and traces of history

The Tschaufer Pond was once an artificially created fishpond and is now a protected natural area. It can be accessed via the village centre of Verschneid or the Proher car park. To drive to Tschaufen from Terlan, the route leads via Verschneid. After the bridge, the car can be parked in front of the barrier; from there, it is about a 40-minute walk to the Tschaufenhaus.

In the Middle Ages, Tschaufen was the hunting lodge of the Lords of Maultasch. A burial mound dating from the Migration Period, between AD 300 and 500, was discovered behind the house at Tschaufen. In Versein, the little church of St. George stands on a hill steeped in history.

Frassineto and the Church of San Biagio

The Church of San Biagio (St. Blaise) stands in the centre of Frassineto. It contains the expressive Baroque fresco „The Feast of the Rich Epulon“ from 1621. The church was first documented in 1325. According to tradition, the blessing of St. Blaise is bestowed there every year on 3 February.
