Hafling combines nature trails, Romanesque churches, distinctive mountain peaks and seasonal sports to create a diverse travel destination.
Nature Trail and Sporting Activities
The Haflinger Adventure Trail is an educational nature trail with 12 stations. It leads from the village of Avelengo to Santa Caterina and is dedicated to the Haflinger horse. If you would like to combine an excursion with nature-related topics, this trail offers a clearly defined focus within the destination.
There is also a strong sporting dimension for mountain bike rides. On the sunny high plateau between Avelengo, Verano and Merano 2000, there are three marked mountain bike downhill routes of varying difficulty. Elevation differences of up to 2,000 m are possible. The Sulfner Equestrian Centre in Santa Caterina in Avelengo also offers horseback rides.
Winter in Merano 2000 and Getting Around
In winter, the Merano 2000 ski area offers skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing. The connection between the valley, village and mountain station is also interesting for getting your bearings: Bus route 225 connects Merano with Falzeben via the village of Avelengo. From Falzeben/Avelengo, the Falzeben cable car takes you to the mountain station of Merano 2000. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore consider whether seasonal activities or the connection between Merano, Avelengo and Falzeben will play the larger role in your travel planning.
Churches with Medieval History
St. Catherine's Church was consecrated in 1251, meaning that its construction dates back to the second quarter of the 13th century. The church is also part of the Alpine Road of Romanesque Art. This makes Hafling home to a religious site whose historical classification reaches back to the Middle Ages.
The parish church of Avelengo also has a clearly documented historical connection: it was first mentioned in documents in 1291 and is dedicated to John the Baptist. The two churches offer different points of interest for visitors wishing to combine architecture, religious history and the development of local communities.
Castles and Museum in the Surrounding Area
Several other cultural destinations with different classifications are located around Avelengo. Castel Gaiano is a castle, as is Castello Rubein. Merano Arte is a museum, while Castello Principesco is also a castle in the area around Avelengo. These sites complement the churches with further specific destinations for culturally oriented travel planning.
Mountain Peaks, Viewpoint and Sulfner Pond
The area around Avelengo is also characterised by several elevations. Picco Ivigna Grande is a mountain peak, as is La Croda Grande. Vorderplattspitze is a mountain in the area around Avelengo. The Passeggiata Lungo Passirio is a viewpoint in the area around Avelengo.
The Sulfner Pond offers a distinct connection with nature: over time, many animal and plant species have settled in and around the pond. In addition to the mountain peaks and viewpoint, this gives you another specific natural focal point that complements your stay with opportunities for observing nature.
