Castle, Mausoleum and Medieval Churches

Schenna Castle was built around 1350 on the orders of the famous Margarethe “Maultasch”. Schenna Castle retains largely original furnishings. Schenna Castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour; online registration is required. You should therefore plan this visit as a fixed cultural appointment if you would like to get to know the rooms and their history.

The religious buildings in Schenna also take you through several centuries. The Mausoleum in Schenna is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic religious building and the final resting place of Archduke Johann of Austria. The Chapel of St. John in the Old Parish Church contains very well-preserved frescoes from the 14th century. St. Martin’s Church is Schenna’s oldest architectural monument and dates back to the 12th century. Together, these sites provide a concentrated insight into religious architecture and the historical development of the village.

Marked Trails between Meadows, Alpine Pastures and Peaks

Schenna has 200 kilometres of marked trails extending from the city limits of Merano through meadows and alpine pastures to the high-alpine peaks of Hirzer and Ifinger. The selection therefore ranges from scenic open trails in the nearby surroundings to routes leading to high-alpine destinations. Depending on how you would like to structure your day, you can focus your plans more strongly on experiencing nature, longer hikes or combining physical activity and culture, without all excursions having the same character.

Verdins–Tall Cable Car and Tall-Hirzer Hiking Area

An important connection for finding your way around the hiking area is the Verdins–Tall cable car. It connects Verdins at 842 metres with Tall at 1,450 metres and leads directly into the Tall-Hirzer hiking area. The two elevations indicate the route of the connection from Verdins to Tall. If you would like to spend time in the mountains, this cable car is one of the specific local points of access you can take into account when planning.

The Legends Trail presents six legends selected from Schenna’s village book. The information panels feature the legends of Schenna in German, Italian and English.
