Lagundo between the Via Claudia Augusta, menhirs and the Waalweg trail

Lagundo combines cultural history with outdoor activities and experiences that appeal to a range of travel interests. The village can be explored through its buildings and historical monuments, as well as through its trails, natural attractions and recurring events.

Architectural history from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period

The old parish church of St Hippolytus and Erhard in Lagundo features three architectural periods: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. The early Gothic Church of St Mary and Maria Steinach Monastery were founded in 1241 by Countess Adelheid of Tyrol. Forst Castle was built in the 13th century and first mentioned in writing in 1302. These three places offer different ways of exploring Lagundo’s history – from sacred architecture to a castle with an early documented written reference.

Menhirs and the Via Claudia Augusta

The menhirs of Lagundo are monumental stone figures believed to have been created more than 5,000 years ago. Via a QR code or borrowed headphones, you can listen to an approximately 15-minute account of the statues in three languages. This allows the visit to be combined with a brief narrated introduction to the significance of the stone figures.

The historic Via Claudia Augusta also runs through Lagundo. Today’s cycling route leads from the Reschen Pass through Lagundo and Merano into the Adige Valley and continues to Bolzano and the Salurn Gap. The intermunicipal Claudia Augusta cycle path passes directly by the Museum at the Bridgehead in Lagundo; the section in question runs along the banks of the Adige through riparian forests to the Hochkreuz viewpoint. Nature experiences for families and hikers

The Aschbach Forest Adventure Trail is an approximately 3.6-kilometre panoramic route that is accessible with a pushchair and introduces children and adults to different habitats of the native forest flora and fauna. Another type of trail is the hike from Aschbach to Naturnser Alm: it is a circular hike through the Naturnser Alm area.

Kneipp facilities and convenient mobility

Around 50 free Kneipp stations are spread throughout the municipality of Lagundo, inviting visitors to refresh body and mind. For stays at participating establishments, the Südtirol GuestPass Algund benefits card is included in the accommodation price; it covers the use of all public transport in South Tyrol and free travel on selected cable cars.

Events and visit planning

Every year, on the second Sunday after Corpus Christi, the villagers of Lagundo light highly visible flaming Sacred Heart symbols on the mountains. Other event highlights include selected markets on the church square and a Christmas market.

The Maria Steinach monastery complex and the monastery church can currently only be viewed from the outside.
