Flavon can be discovered from two perspectives: cultural history and outdoor activity. Those who want to learn about not only individual buildings during their stay, but also paths, landscapes and a local story, will find various specific points of interest. The range extends from sacred art and historical ownership to waterside walking paths, a pilgrimage stage and a seasonally regulated tunnel passage.

Castel Flavon and the history of the village

The ruins of Castel Flavon are located near Flavon. Castel Flavon successively belonged to the Counts of Flavon, the Coredo family of Castel Valer and, most recently, the Spaur nobles. A local legend recounts that the inhabitants of Flavon freed the prince-bishop from Castel Flavon by mixing poppy powder into the guards’ wine. The succession of owners and the legend thus offer two different ways of approaching the history of Flavon.

Parish church and sacred art

The parish church of Flavon is one of the oldest churches in Val di Non. The parish church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist was rebuilt in the 16th century in the Cles style and is decorated with frescoes by the Baschenis family. For visitors interested in culture, it combines regional context with a history of reconstruction and artistic decoration.

Flavon on the old route

Flavon lies along a very old Roman route connecting Val di Non with the Valle dell’Adige. For travellers interested in regional history, this route provides an additional point of reference.

The Sentiero Margherita along the Lez

The Sentiero Margherita is a level walking path that follows the “Lez” irrigation canal. The canal was built more than 160 years ago to irrigate the fields of Terres, Flavon and Cunevo. As a result, the path combines walking alongside the water with a tangible reminder of earlier irrigation practices.

The Sentiero Margherita passes through a pleasant pine forest above the municipalities of ContĂ . Along the path, there are equipped areas where walkers can take a break. Deer can be observed in the forest along the Sentiero Margherita. The forest, rest areas and possible wildlife sightings give the walking path its own distinctive landscape character in addition to the route along the canal.

Pilgrimage stage and stamp station

On the fifth stage of the Cammino Jacopeo d'Anaunia, Flavon’s stamp station is located at the Church of San Giovanni Battista.

The tunnel passage to Val di Tovel

From the Sentiero Margherita route, it is possible to enter a tunnel via the Terres irrigation reservoir; the tunnel ends in Val di Tovel after 2.5 km. The tunnel is subject to seasonal opening regulations from 1 May to 31 October.
