Art in the village landscape and medieval traces

Tonadico stands out for its folk paintings, which can be seen on the façades of several buildings. The paintings date from different periods and give the village the character of a “village art gallery”. The history of Tonadico is therefore reflected not only in individual buildings, but also in its visible village landscape.

The Chiesa di San Vittore stands on a hill above Tonadico. It can be reached from the historic town centre via a short, steep climb. During the restoration of the church, medieval painted decoration was uncovered, giving a visit to this place of worship a special historical dimension.

Palazzo Scopoli and the products of Primiero

Palazzo Scopoli was originally built as a granary and food store. The building, now known as Casa del Cibo, hosts meetings and tastings. Here, you can discover the products of Primiero and explore another aspect of the local culture.

The Boaletti hydroelectric power station also tells the story of the area's technological history. It began operating in 1903 and was one of the first hydroelectric power stations in Italy. The restored facility forms part of the educational nature trail “Da Tonadico al Cimerlo sul cammino della storia”. Along this route, visitors can learn about the history and operation of the facility.

Villa Welsperg and the nature of Primiero

Built in 1853, Villa Welsperg is located on the lake of the same name and houses the visitor centre of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park. The centre presents the geographical areas of the nature park in six exhibition rooms, providing a tangible introduction to the protected area's diverse landscapes.

At the Villa Welsperg visitor centre, children and young people can follow a trail featuring small tasks. It introduces them to animals found in the park, including deer, a lynx mother and marmots. This area also appeals to families who want to explore nature together in a playful setting.

Val Canali begins behind Tonadico and leads into the Dolomitic heart of the Pale di San Martino. At the entrance to Val Canali, the ruins of Castel Pietra stand on a rocky spur. Here, the landscape and historical traces exist in close spatial connection, without either place losing its own distinctive history.

Practical information for your visit

People with reduced mobility and families with prams can access Palazzo Scopoli via the rear entrance, which provides direct access to the lift. For safety reasons, this entrance is opened on request. The InQuadRra Primiero cultural project also offers visitors an information-based journey of discovery through the history of Tonadico and the artistic expressions of the villages of Primiero.
