Prags between Lake Prags and Prato Piazza
Prags reveals its distinctive character in the connection between the valley and the high plateau. Lake Prags lies at the end of the Prags Valley in the municipality of Prags and in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. It was formed when a massive landslide from Sasso del Signore dammed the course of the Rio Braies and created a natural dam. For your travel planning, this means that a lake is at the heart of a landscape with a clear geological background.
Prags between the lake and the high plateau
Prato Piazza provides a contrast in terms of altitude. The area is a high plateau located at 2,000 m in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park and surrounded by high peaks. In both summer and winter, it is suitable for walking, Nordic walking, hiking, climbing and cycling. Depending on the time of year you travel, you can therefore plan different activities here.
A winter hike on the Prags sunny mountain passes several traditionally preserved mountain farmsteads and reaches its highest point at 1,410 m. From there, it offers a view of the end of the Prags Valley with Seekofel. The family trail from the Prato Piazza car park leads directly to Malga Prato Piazza via trail no. 40/A.
Themed trails and springs
The themed educational trail to the Maite Springs in Braies di Fuori leads to a spring area in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. As part of trail no. 37, it is easy to walk. Wooden boards provide information about flora and fauna, spring protection and various ways of using the water, especially as drinking water. This trail therefore combines observing the landscape with clear, accessible information on site.
History at Lake Prags
The lake also has a historical aspect. The chapel at Lake Prags was the scene of a significant historical event connected with the liberation of famous prisoners during the Second World War. From Welsberg railway station, trail no. 2A leads through meadows to Schmieden; from there, trail no. 1, the Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell Trail, continues to Lake Prags. Information boards along the themed trail provide information about the life and work of the mountaineer.
Planning your journey and accommodation in Prags
Bus route 442 runs directly from Toblach or Dobbiaco and Niederdorf or Villabassa to Lake Prags. The lake can be reached by bicycle at any time; there are no restrictions on travelling there. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Prags, you can regard these different destinations as the focal points of your trip: the lake with its nature park and chapel, Prato Piazza with its high plateau and peaks, or the themed trails to the springs and across the sunny mountain. If you would like to include the bus route or bicycle, your preferred means of transport should also be part of your personal decision about where to stay.
