Sospirolo between waterfalls, mountain paths and history
Sospirolo between water, gorges and mountain paths
Sospirolo takes you into a landscape of waterfalls, gorges, glacial landforms and mountain paths. In the Brenton Valley, in the lower section of the valley, eight kilometres by road from Sospirolo, spectacular waterfalls and erosion-formed potholes await. Their hollows reach depths of up to four metres, making the forms created by the water immediately visible.
The Cadini del Brenton can be reached near the bridge over the Mis stream in Gena Bassa via an easy, equipped path. Here, the cool, humid microclimate favours rhododendrons and mountain pines, which normally grow at higher elevations. The short approach therefore leads to plant life that reveals a distinctive geographical character.
Water landscapes and plant life
The water of the Soffia stream plunges about twelve metres into a narrow gorge beneath a rock overhang that projects approximately sixteen metres. In Val Falcina, plant species widespread in the east are significant; some of them reach the western limit of their range there.
The Masiere form the terminal moraine of an ancient glacier. Together with the area around Lake Vedana, they form a nature reserve of botanical and geological value. This gives you different natural themes side by side for planning your outings: water, rock, Ice Age landforms and remarkable plant distribution.
Paths with varying levels of difficulty
From Sospirolo, Monte Sperone can be reached by an asphalt road as far as the Cappelletta degli Alpini. From there, a marked path leads over the Selletta del Dof to the summit. From the top, the view extends across the Val Belluna, the Belluno Prealps, Monte Pizzocco with its impressive north face, and the Monti del Sole group.
The path to Piz Vedana rises from 540 metres to 1,324 metres and is suitable for experienced hikers. The Val Falcina nature trail offers a different pace: it begins at the bridge over the Falcina stream, which you can reach via Provincial Road No. 2 through the Valle del Mis. You can park your car at Pian della Falcina; the short circular route is also suitable for less experienced hikers.
The Cascate della Soffia can be reached from Bar alla Soffia and the Chiesetta di San Remedio via an equipped path in just a few minutes. Canoeing is also possible in the Valle del Mis.
History in Vedana and Santa Giuliana
History is also one of the defining themes of Sospirolo. The San Marco hospice in Vedana, which also included San Gottardo, accommodated travellers passing along the Canale d’Agordo in the 11th century. Around the 15th century, the Vedana hospice was converted into a charterhouse by the Carthusian monks of the Order of Saint Bruno.
In Santa Giuliana, the discovery of a Roman inscription confirms the importance of the settlement site since Late Antiquity. Natural experiences and historic sites can thus be combined in your travel plans.
