Fonzaso Among Trails and Panoramic Views

Fonzaso combines impressive landscapes, traces of history and regional traditions. The Covolo di San Michele is a prominent place where these elements come together. At an altitude of around 550 m, it stands in an open, commanding position overlooking the Fonzaso basin. The Covolo includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael and a statue of the Virgin Mary in an artificially created niche. If you are looking for a place where landscape and religiously shaped history meet directly, this site is one of the defining highlights around Fonzaso.

Hiking with Local History

The route to Campon d’Avena begins at the car park behind Fonzaso Town Hall. It first leads through the historic centre along Via Mezzaterra and Via Calzen, then continues along the old mule track of Galina. At Cima Loreto, the route opens up to views across the Cismon Valley and the Monte Grappa massif.

The Cammino Retico offers a considerably longer hiking experience. The trail can be completed in seven days, is approximately 170 km long and passes through ten municipalities in Veneto and Trentino. Its historic centres include Fonzaso, Arsiè, Seren del Grappa, Cesiomaggiore, Feltre and Pedavena. This allows you to choose between a regional multi-day route and shorter explorations without losing sight of the historic character of the towns.

Rock, Walks and Wine

The Falesia di Fonzaso offers around 40 technical climbing routes on edges and in pockets. The approach follows the signs to the Eremo di San Micèl and takes about 20 minutes. The Giro dei Loch is a 5.50 km communal recreational walk for primary and lower secondary school students from Fonzaso, leading through the town’s streets and to the Loch di Fonzaso.

Winegrowing is also part of the area’s local character. In the Fonzaso area, it is an age-old tradition that has been preserved to this day.

Architecture and Regional Connections

The Roman Via Paolina, a branch of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, ran through the Fonzaso area. In the main town, Villa De Pantz is one of the most significant surviving architectural testimonies to the town’s flourishing period in the 18th century. Anyone interested in historic connections and built heritage will find different historical layers here: a Roman road route and a surviving building from the town’s period of prosperity.

The SS 50 del Grappa e di Passo Rolle is also important for understanding the region. It connects Fonzaso westwards with Primiero and eastwards with Feltre, 9 km away, and Belluno, 40 km away. Agriculture and Festival Traditions

Malga Campon lies at an altitude of 1,497 m. It is an agricultural guest farm with a restaurant as well as a cheese dairy selling dairy products and cured meats. At the Festa dell'Uva 2025 in Fonzaso, a traditional parade with allegorical floats through the town’s streets was announced for Sunday, 28 September 2025.
