Dosoledo between Ladin culture and themed trails

Dosoledo combines visible traces of mountain architecture with Ladin culture, religious art and trails that convey regional traditions within the surrounding landscape. On the outskirts of the village, a long row of wooden barns has been preserved. It recalls the historic architecture and former way of life of the mountain population. In this way, part of the village is reflected not only in individual buildings but also in a traditional rural structure.

An important cultural reference point is the Museo Algudnei in Dosoledo, Comelico Superiore. Algudnei is a cultural project that presents research findings about the local area and the Ladin culture of Comelico. Anyone interested in the history and cultural character of the village will find a direct introduction to these topics here. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays.

Church art and historic façades

The Church of Saints Rocco and Osvaldo houses a pearwood altar created by Andrea Brustolon in 1722–1723. The altar is dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata. At the same time, the church is the first Neoclassical church in Comelico; its construction was further developed between 1839 and 1844 by Giuseppe Segusini. For practical planning, it is important to note that there are steps at the entrance, making the church difficult to access for people with disabilities.

Palazzo Zandonella also contributes to the historic appearance of the village with its details. The monumental entrance portal is made of dark tuff, while the window surrounds are made of yellow tuff. The façade also features an eagle coat of arms. Together with the wooden barns and the church, this makes it possible to observe Dosoledo’s architectural diversity in several specific buildings, without reducing the village to a single motif.

Masks and living traditions

The “maskarada” of Dosoledo takes place every year on the Sunday closest to 9 February, the feast of Saint Apollonia. During the Dosoledo procession, the traditional masks “lachè”, “matazin”, “matazera” and “vecia” appear. These two references make the mask tradition an independent cultural topic for visitors who want to get to know Dosoledo not only through its buildings but also through its customs.

Themed trails around Dosoledo

Several “Troi” trails explore the history and mountain traditions of Comelico. The stage from Auronzo di Cadore to Candide reaches Dosoledo via the “troi di mistieri”. There, wooden sculptures recall historic occupations. Four themed “Troi” trails connect Dosoledo with Padola, Leri, Candide and Casa Mazzagno; wooden sculptures by local carvers tell stories about the mountain traditions of Comelico.

The “Tròi dli mascri” runs between Dosoledo and the Fienile di Bigaran. Around twenty sculptures made of native larch depict the theme of Carnival there. The “Tròi dli Tradizion” is an easy themed trail between Candide and Dosoledo; its starting point is on Via Staunovo in Dosoledo. This brings different thematic focuses together: historic occupations, the mountain traditions of Comelico, Carnival and local heritage. The specific choice can therefore be based on the interests of your travel group.
